ENGINEERING ASSISTANT
(TEMPORARY)
HOURLY: $15.00
Purpose of Classification
The Cameron County Engineering Division is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented individual to assist with various technical and administrative tasks in support of ongoing public works and infrastructure projects. This part-time, temporary role offers exposure to real-world engineering practices within a local government setting and is ideal for students or recent graduates in engineering, construction management, or related fields.
Essential Functions
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Assist with field inspections, site visits, and data collection for roadway, drainage, and construction projects.
- Support GIS mapping, survey data entry, and records management
- Prepare or revise engineering drawings, maps, and exhibits using AutoCAD or similar software (as applicable)
- Compile and review documentation such as project reports, specifications, and cost estimates
- Provide administrative support, including filing, organizing plans, and updating digital project files
- Perform other duties as assigned under the supervision of professional staff
Additional Functions
Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- Currently enrolled student or recently completed a degree program in civil engineering, construction management, or a related field
- Basic knowledge of engineering principles and terminology
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)
- Familiarity with CAD software, GIS tools, or similar applications is a plus
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions
- Valid driver's license (if field work is required)

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert medium physical effort in medium work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of medium weight (20-30 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motion at a keyboard or work station.
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors:
- Office and field environments
- May require occasional lifting of equipment, walking on uneven terrain, or exposure to outdoor conditions
This is not a Civil Service covered position.
