Temporary Part-Time Residential Community Safety Officer (RCSO)

The part-time, temporary Residential Community Safety Officer (RCSO) is a part-time, temporary position that assists the Department of Public Safety (DPS) in maintaining safe access in campus residential halls.

Education and Experience

• High School diploma or GED required.
• Previous experience in a collegiate setting is preferred.
• Must possess a valid New York State identification.
• Must be able to obtain a New York State Security Guard license and meet department and New York State Security Guard Act standards and qualifications.
• Successful completion of a Field Training Program.
• Able/willing to work evening, day and afternoon shifts, including weekends and holidays.
• Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a thorough background check which includes employment history, character references and a criminal records check.
• Upon hire, candidates must submit to a pre-employment drug test and future random drug screenings.

Skills and Knowledge

• Ability to work independently or as part of a team and the ability to interrelate with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
• Ability to be creative and innovative in solving issues and problems.
• Experience with Windows based computer systems and email needed.
• Exceptional customer service skills, with assertive, yet helpful personality necessary.
• Written communication skills needed, including legible and/or typed (computer) forms of communication.
• Ability to read, comprehend, and follow policies and procedures essential.
• Attention to detail, focus and alertness required.

Responsibilities

• The Residential Community Safety Officer is responsible for validating access at designated residential living center doors during specific scheduled hours.
• Validate the IDs of all persons entering the residential facility utilizing a Windows based computer and related access control card reader technology.
• Ensure that all visitors and guests are signed in and the appropriate sponsorship is confirmed.
• When necessary, effectively communicate with non-authorized visitors University's access policies.
• Use sound judgment and reasoning when faced with questionable or ambiguous situations.
• Be responsible for accurate time reporting.
• Prepare reports regarding unauthorized access, including creating incident reports and judicial complaints.
• Utilize standard portable radio communication to report incidents to Public Safety.
• Foot patrol may be required.
• Other duties as assigned.
