    The Department of Biology has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Technologist 2 to join their team.

    This opportunity is a non-permanent, hourly position expected to begin 10/01/2026.

    About this Opportunity

    Reporting to Dr. Carrie Tribble, the Research Technologist 2 is responsible for collecting and analyzing data on the evolutionary history of an Andean plant group. The researcher will be responsible, with support from the PI, for extracting and sequencing DNA, analyzing genomic data, and modeling the relationship between plant evolutionary history and the abiotic environment of the Andes.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Wet lab work, including DNA extractions and DNA quantification (20%)

    • Bioinformatic analysis and data processing (65%)

    • Fieldwork (optional) (5%)

    • Lab management support, including purchasing, and coordinating lab safety (10%)

    Required Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Botany, or related field, PLUS

    • One year of research experience equivalent to Research Technologist I OR one year of full-time post-baccalaureate college in an appropriate field of science or technology.

    • Professional level experience may be substituted, year-for-year, for the formal academic degree.

    • Applicants who do not meet these qualifications WILL NOT be forwarded to the Hiring Manager.

    Additional Qualifications

    • Demonstrated ability to follow laboratory protocols accurately and maintain detailed records.

    • Basic knowledge of molecular biology principles, including DNA extraction and nucleic acid handling.

    • Experience analyzing biological data using computational tools. 

    • Experience using a command-line environment (e.g., Linux/macOS Terminal) or ability to learn computational tools quickly.

    • Willingness to learn bioinformatic workflows.

    • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

    • Careful attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, reproducible data.

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

    • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a research team.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience with DNA extraction and DNA quantification procedures.

    • Experience preparing samples for next-generation sequencing.

    • Experience with bioinformatic analysis of genomic or phylogenetic data.

    • Experience using Linux command-line environments and scripting languages such as Bash, Python, or R.

    • Experience with phylogenetic inference or comparative genomics.

    • Familiarity with Git/GitHub and reproducible computational workflows.

    • Experience working with high-performance computing (HPC) clusters.

    • Experience working with herbarium collections or botanical specimens.

    • Experience conducting botanical fieldwork.

    • Knowledge of plant systematics, evolution, or genomics.

    • Conversational proficiency in Spanish.

    Compensation, Benefits and Position Details

    Pay Range Minimum:

    $21.70 hourly

    Pay Range Maximum:

    $28.92 hourly
