GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

 

This position performs basic manual labor and general landscaping associated with the maintenance of facilities, grounds, parks, open spaces, athletic fields, and irrigation systems including mowing, weed control and removal, turf maintenance, snow removal, shrub, and tree maintenance.  Operation of equipment including mowers, chain saws, pruners, trimmers, blowers, sprayers, snow blowers and other general maintenance equipment. Provides special event support, maintain and/or clean park facilities, courts, structures, fields, trails, grounds, and equipment.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

  • Performs routine irrigation system maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, and repairs. Including sprinkler heads, pipe fitting, solenoid valves, gate valves, service tees and mainline repairs.
  • Prepares and maintains baseball and softball fields which include mound, home plate, pitching rubber, batters box, base anchor housings, infield skin work and bullpens.
  • Prepare athletic fields and sports courts for sports activities; measures, lays out, chalks, and paints field lines, as necessary.
  • Performs turf maintenance utilizing motorized equipment.
  • Performs mowing, trimming, weeding, planting, cultivation, fertilization, watering and pruning operations.
  • Performs planter/annual flowerbed care.
  • Performs general landscape and cleanup duties, including trash, litter pickup and debris removal, graffiti removal and litter pickup.
  • Performs tree maintenance utilizing chain saws, poles saws, and other equipment as needed.
  • Utilize work order systems and electronic applications.
  • Performs trail work and maintenance.
  • Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, equipment, and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, washing/cleaning equipment, or cleaning shop/work areas; to maintain efficiency and safety.
  • Use hand and power tools. 
  • Operate a light tractor with attachments.
  • Use hand gardening tools.
  • Operates snow blower and shovel snow for snow removal.
  • Paint and stain buildings, signs, park tables, benches, and equipment. 
  • Clean and repair City buildings.
  • Performs tasks in accordance with all federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations for the safety of staff and the public.
  • Maintain excellent public relations, by assuring that public inquiries are answered in a courteous manner and that complaints are responded to promptly. Where appropriate, refer public inquiries to the Park Supervisor or Parks and Recreation Director.

 

All work activities shall be conducted in compliance with the Safety and Accident Prevention Plan.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Ability to operate a computer with applicable programs such as Word, Excel and be willing to learn data tracking program. Learn and implement facility and equipment reporting software.

  • Ability to take initiative and apply considerable ingenuity and practical knowledge to interpret, resolve new, unusual, or particularly troublesome situations. 
  • Ability to read and interpret technical materials pertaining to ground maintenance, including catalogs, blueprints, maps, journals, and manuals.

EDUCATION AND /OR EXPERIENCE:

 

High School Diploma or GED required.

Must be at least 18 years of age.

 

Minimum 1 year experience in:

 

  • The methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in all phases of park maintenance, including knowledge of electricity, plumbing, carpentry, and cement work, and an extensive knowledge of irrigation systems to include above ground sprinkler systems and underground irrigation.
  • Athletic field maintenance and preparation.
  • Upkeep of facilities and equipment maintenance, including use and care of power and hand tools.
  • Computer/word processing system, preferably with Microsoft Word and Excel spreadsheets.

 

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

 

  • Valid Washington State Motor Vehicle Operator’s License and a driving record free from serious or frequent traffic violations.

 

Required within first year:

 

·        CPR, First Aid Training Certificate and Bloodborne Pathogens Training.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS :

 

Most work is performed outdoors in all kinds of weather conditions and may involve potential exposure to hazards such as moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes and airborne particles, chemicals, vibrations, extreme heat, extreme cold, disruptive people and may place the employee at risk of occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens.  The noise level of the work environment is usually moderate to loud. Physical strength and ability to perform moderate to heavy manual labor for extended periods of time under dirty and uncomfortable conditions in all types of weather, as necessary. Must be able to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull lift, grasp, feel, talk, hear, and see. Will also perform repetitive motions with wrists, hands, finger, knees, ankles, and feet. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. May work alone in dealing with public confrontations. Scheduling may demand working more than forty (40) hours per week.
