Overview

  • ​Designs and builds costumes, props, sets, and lighting using appropriate theatre techniques.

  • Creates, fits, and alters stage-worthy costumes from patterns and materials.

  • Modifies existing costumes to match designer sketches.

  • Reads and interprets blueprints, sketches, and designs.

  • Paints and finishes scenic art based on renderings and models.

  • Communicates with team members to gather materials and design information.

  • Operates and maintains theatre tools, equipment, and shop space.

  • Assists with the load-in and strike of productions.

  • May supervise and instruct support staff.

  • May order supplies and provide budget input.

  • Follows health and safety standards in the theatre.

  • Performs other related tasks as needed.

Physical Requirements: Ability to climb non-ADA compliant stairs, ability to carry 40 lbs, manual dexterity and precision

Principal Responsibilities

1. Handles and moves costumes, lights, props, sets and sound equipment as directed. 2. May serve on run crew. Maintains production specific items including but not limited to props, food and costumes. May assist in load-in and strike of productions. 3. Assists sound designers in creating running sheets and track mixing console settings. Sets up and checks sound system prior to technical rehearsals and performances. 4. Assists in scenic painting, texturing, carving and finishing for large scale productions. Paints, textures, carves and completed finish work for small scale productions. 5. Troubleshoots minor problems during rehearsals and performances. 6. Operates appropriate theatrical equipment. Provides technical support for backstage communications, maintenance and repair. Participates in maintenance of appropriate theatrical equipment. 7. Acts as courier and drives vehicles as necessary. May oversee and instruct support staff. Complies with theatre’s health and safety standards. 8. Performs other functions incidental to theatre activities as needed/requested. Required Education and Experience Two years of related work experience and a high school level education; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
