Introduction

The Thomas B. Finan Center is an inpatient psychiatric hospital located in Cumberland, Maryland. It is owned and managed by the state of Maryland. This state psychiatric facility operates 88 beds. The Finan Center provides services to persons who are 18 years of age and older.

 This facility is located two and a half hours from Baltimore, MD.

Main Purpose of Job

The Therapeutic Recreator I, CI is the intermediate level of work assessing, planning, implementing and performing therapeutic recreation in the treatment of mentally ill, aged, physically ill, or physically disabled patients or developmentally disabled clients in State treatment facilities or community-based programs. This Therapeutic Recreator I, CI position does not supervise.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:Â Â Â A Bachelorâs or Masterâs degree in therapeutic recreation or recreation with a major in therapeutic recreation from an accredited college or university

Experience:Â None.Â

Notes:Â

  1. Current certification as a Therapeutic Recreator from the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification may be substituted for the education requirements.Â

  2. Experience as a professional therapeutic recreator, under the supervision of a licensed Occupational Therapist, licensed Physical Therapist or certified Activity Therapist, which included the responsibility for clientsâ assessments and the planning, implementation and evaluation of clientsâ recreation therapy treatment in a mental health or developmental disability setting may be substituted for the education requirement on a year for year basis. Experience assisting in these responsibilities will not be accepted as qualifying experience.Â

  3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Physical Therapy classifications or Physical Therapist and Medical Specialists specialty codes in the therapeutic field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The desired candidate should possess the following:

  • Experience with psychiatric patients/residents.
  • Experience leading group and individual therapeutic recreation activities.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

  1. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operatorâs license valid in the State of Maryland.

  2. Employees in some positions in this classification may be required to operate vehicles which require a specific motor vehicle operatorâs license valid in the State of Maryland.

  3. Employees in this classification may be required to successfully complete cardiopulmonary resuscitation training and maintain current certification.Â

  4. Employees in this classification at facilities with a swimming pool may be required to obtain Red Cross instruction and certification in Life Saving and Water Safety prior to appointment.
