Job Summary:

The Tool and Die Maker is responsible for fabricating, maintaining, and repairing precision tools, dies, fixtures, and gauges used in production operations. This role ensures tooling meets exact specifications and supports efficient manufacturing processes. Learn more at www.steelobrien.com.

Primary Functions:

  • Interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and CAD files to manufacture precision components.
  • Set up and operate manual and CNC machine tools, including lathes, mills, and grinders.
  • Fabricate, assemble, and maintain precision tooling, jigs, fixtures, and gauges to support production.
  • Design and build custom jigs and fixtures to meet departmental and production requirements.
  • Inspect finished components using precision measuring instruments to ensure quality and accuracy.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and refurbish worn or damaged tooling to minimize downtime and maintain efficiency.
  • Support maintenance activities by assisting with equipment troubleshooting, repairs, and improvement projects.
  • Collaborate with engineering and production teams to optimize tooling design and performance.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of tooling modifications, repairs.
  • Adhere to all safety standards and maintain a clean, organized work environment.
  • Other duties as assigned

Primary Competencies:

  • Strong ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and CAD files.
  • Proficiency in operating manual and CNC machining equipment.
  • Skilled in precision measurement and quality inspection techniques.
  • Mechanical aptitude with strong troubleshooting and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Knowledge of tooling design, fabrication, and maintenance practices.
  • Attention to detail with a focus on accuracy and quality.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong organizational skills, including documentation and record-keeping.
  • Commitment to workplace safety and continuous improvement.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; technical training preferred.
  • Completion of a Tool and Die apprenticeship program preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience in tool and die or precision machining.
  • Proficiency in blueprint reading and GD&T.
  • Experience with manual machining equipment;
  • CNC experience preferred or willingness to learn.
  • Demonstrated ability to safely set up and operate shop equipment in accordance with established procedures.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
