Position Overview:
The Tool and Equipment Business Manager leads UMC's tool and equipment operation as an internal business unit supporting field execution, jobsite readiness, and cost recovery. This role owns the daily performance and long-term development of the Tool and Equipment team, including eight direct reports made up of union and non-union tool coordinators and specialists.
This is a working business manager role for an ambitious operator who wants end-to-end ownership of a high-impact function. The Tool and Equipment Business Manager is responsible for organizing the overall system, improving operational discipline, developing the team, and managing an internal rental operation with $6 million in annual internal rental revenue and related business volume.
The ideal candidate will bring experience from inventory control, logistics, warehouse operations, or a similar environment. Hands-on tool knowledge is preferred, but the stronger requirement is leadership ability, inventory discipline, system ownership, and the desire to grow into broader logistics and operations leadership at a company preparing to double in size in 2026.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the Tool and Equipment team in daily execution, including work planning, prioritization, coaching, follow-up, and performance management.
- Own the tool and equipment operation as an internal business unit, with accountability for service quality, system accuracy, business volume, and internal rental charge discipline.
- Monitor and track tools and equipment by job site on a weekly and monthly basis.
- Maintain accurate service logs to ensure timely maintenance, repairs, and replacement of equipment.
- Keep tool and equipment pricing current in the ToolWatch system.
- Communicate regularly with Project Managers, Forepersons, and field leaders regarding tools currently rented to their projects.
- Drive on-time request completion, inventory accuracy, and accurate tool charge dollar value.
- Identify opportunities to improve tool availability, return discipline, repair cycle time, inventory control, and overall customer service to jobsites.
- Build scalable processes that support company growth, improve accountability, and reduce waste.
