Job Title: Tool & Die Maker

Job Description

The Tool & Die Maker constructs, maintains, and repairs new and existing tooling and dies to support roll forming and metal fabrication operations. This role interprets blueprints and CAD drawings, designs jigs and templates, sets up and operates a variety of machine tools, and ensures that all tools and dies meet precise specifications and quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Construct and maintain new and existing tooling and dies to support production operations.
  • Read and interpret CAD drawings, blueprints, and design schematics to plan and execute tooling work.
  • Design jigs and templates as work aids to improve accuracy and efficiency in the fabrication of parts.
  • Measure and mark metal stock for machining according to specified dimensions and tolerances.
  • Set up machine tools such as drills, lathes, grinders, presses, and milling machines for tooling and die work.
  • Cut and shape blocks and metal stock to specified dimensions using appropriate metalworking tools.
  • Fit and assemble tools and die parts, ensuring proper alignment, clearances, and function.
  • Inspect finished dies and tools for defects, smoothness, contour accuracy, and overall quality.
  • Perform test runs with completed tools and dies to verify performance and make necessary adjustments.
  • Repair or replace defective parts in tools and dies to restore proper function.
  • Fabricate parts using metalworking tools, including drills, milling machines, grinders, and related equipment.
  • Utilize precision measuring tools such as various types of calipers, micrometers, and gages to verify dimensions.
  • Inspect tools and dies throughout construction and maintenance processes to ensure compliance with specifications.
  • Work with roll forming or rolled alloys, aluminum, and metal coil materials in tooling and die applications.
  • Follow directions from engineering leadership and collaborate closely with the tool room and production teams.
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and efficient work area within the tool room and manufacturing facility.

Essential Skills

  • Hands-on experience constructing and maintaining tooling and dies in a manufacturing environment.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting CAD drawings, blueprints, and design schematics.
  • Experience with CAD and AutoCAD for tooling, die, and jig design.
  • Demonstrated ability to design jigs and templates as work aids in the fabrication of parts.
  • Skill in setting up and operating machine tools such as drills, lathes, grinders, presses, and milling machines.
  • Ability to cut and shape blocks and metal stock to precise dimensions.
  • Experience fitting and assembling tools and die parts with high accuracy.
  • Proven ability to inspect finished dies and tools for defects, smoothness, and contour deformities.
  • Experience conducting test runs with completed tools and dies and adjusting as needed.
  • Back ground in roll forming or working with rolled alloys, aluminum, and metal coil.
  • Ability to repair or replace defective parts in tools and dies.
  • Proficiency in the fabrication of metal parts using standard metalworking tools.
  • Strong skills using micrometers, calipers, and gages for first article and in-process inspection.
  • Ability to perform first article inspection and verify conformance to specifications.
  • Vocational or technical degree in a related field or equivalent technical training.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in a roll forming manufacturing environment is highly beneficial.
  • Familiarity with over-the-coil bending and coil handling processes.
  • Comfort working with a high volume of roll forming machines and related tooling.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality tooling and dies.
  • Ability to follow engineering direction while working independently in a tool room setting.
  • Solid problem-solving skills for diagnosing and correcting tooling and die issues.
  • Effective communication skills to collaborate with engineering, production, and maintenance teams.

Work Environment

This role is based in a manufacturing facility in North Gardena, California, within a premier roll forming operation that utilizes over 40 roll forming machines. The position is hands-on and primarily located in the tool room, with regular interaction on the production floor. The work involves coil bending, roll forming, and metal fabrication using drills, milling machines, grinders, presses, and other metalworking tools. The standard schedule is a first shift from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., operating on an 8-hour shift. The environment is industrial and production-focused, requiring adherence to safety procedures and appropriate work attire suitable for a manufacturing setting.

This is a Contract position based out of Gardena, CA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $38.00 - $40.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
