Manufacturing Tooling Engineer

Design and develop tools and machinery used to facilitate and optimize manufacturing processes. Reviews product design and build requirements to determine tooling concepts, design options, testing plans, and specifications. Develops designs for stamp tooling, fixtures, jigs, gauges, cutting and forming tools, carts, racks, and other items to support production. Utilizes Computer-Aided Design (CAD) to create accurate, complete, and concise design models and documentation to fabricate tools. Estimates costs, resource requirements, and materials required for tools. Manage the sourcing, quoting, or procurement of purchased tools. Typically requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Occasionally directed in several aspects of the work. Gaining exposure to some of the complex tasks within the job function. Typically requires 2–4 years of related experience.

Essential Key Functions and Accountabilities: (Responsibilities and major tasks performed)

  • Manage design-related projects that support new tooling, tooling transfer, process improvement, or other projects assigned by the Engineering Manager.
  • Act as primary contact to tool shops and tool design providers for assigned projects.
  • Assist with targeted improvements and/or troubleshooting of existing processes and tools as requested to improve quality, throughput, and/or profitability.
  • Participate in concept review meetings to support new manufacturing processes.
  • Proactively communicate with internal customers on project status and resolution of priority conflicts.
  • Participate in tooling design reviews to support new tooling designs being completed internally or externally. Publish meeting notes and action items.
  • Make sure all new tooling has appropriate tooling models and drawings supplied by tool providers, and these are filed according to our standards.
  • Create and update tool models and drawings as necessary.
  • Communicate with internal/external customers and suppliers to resolve issues with tool drawings and/or electronic files.
  • Execution of policy/procedures in accordance with our QMS.

Experience and Education Required:

2 or more years of direct experience designing:

  • Assembly Fixtures
  • Welding Fixtures
  • Blanking Tools
  • Forming Tools
  • Multi-Station Progressing or Transfer Stamping Dies
  • Quality Inspection Gauges (Form and True Position)
