Position Summary and Special Duties
As a Toolmaker / Moldmaker, you will play a critical role in building, repairing, and maintaining complex plastic injection molds. This hands-on position requires strong mechanical aptitude, precision machining experience, and a deep understanding of mold components and tooling processes.
Your day-to-day duties will include, but may not be limited to:
- Disassemble, debug, repair, and reassemble plastic injection molds using industry best practices
- Troubleshoot issues with mold performance, mechanisms, tooling fit, and part quality
- Operate manual tool room machinery including surface grinders and Bridgeport milling machines
- Inspect mold components using dial indicators, micrometers, calipers, depth gauges, gauge blocks, and shadowgraphs
- Perform surface grinding, fitting, polishing, and bench work to exacting tolerances
- Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and detailed work orders
- Work to extremely tight tolerances (±0.0002") and understand tolerance stacking principles
- Maintain organized, clean work area and ensure safe operation of all tools and equipment
- Collaborate with engineering, production, and quality teams to ensure molds are built and repaired to exact specifications
- Provide input on tooling improvements, preventative maintenance, and mold performance enhancements
- Knowledge or exposure to CNC Milling and EDM is a plus
Job Specifications
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in Moldmaking or Toolmaking (injection molding environment strongly preferred)
- Strong understanding of mold components, mold construction, and injection molding processes
- Ability to operate manual tool room machines (surface grinder, Bridgeport, etc.)
- High proficiency with manual inspection tools and precision measurement
- Strong mechanical aptitude with ability to diagnose and correct mold issues
- Ability to read complex blueprints and engineering drawings
- Knowledge of CNC milling or EDM processes is beneficial
- Must be able to work independently with accuracy, consistency, and attention to detail
