Tow Boat Pilot — Enstructure

Location: 382 Klinke Road, Memphis, TN 38127

Job Type: Full-Time

Pay: $500–$575 per day, based on experience

Schedule: Vessel-based, full-time. Towing operations run on a rotation; the specific hitch schedule is discussed at the interview.

About the Role

You'll run the boat. As a Tow Boat Pilot, you're responsible for the safe, efficient operation of your vessel, your tow, and your crew as you move barges and support loading and unloading along the river. You set the standard onboard — for safety, for the work, and for the people you lead. This is a licensed, senior role for a mariner who already knows how to handle a towing vessel and wants to captain one.

A Note on the Work

This is real on-the-water, outdoor work. You'll be on a vessel in all conditions, handling rigging that weighs up to 100 lbs, climbing steep stairs, and standing or sitting for long stretches. It's physically demanding and safety-critical — the right person takes pride in running a tight, safe boat and looking out for their crew. If that's you, you'll do well here.

What You'll Do

  • Operate the vessel and tow safely and efficiently, and direct the work of your crew
  • Lead crew management — assignments, training, performance, and general supervision
  • Run monthly safety drills and meetings, and keep the boat in line with company and USCG safety policies
  • Make sure every crew member knows the cargo in each barge and the hazards that come with it
  • Serve as the designated vessel security officer under the Vessel Security Plan
  • Report Certain Dangerous Cargoes (CDC) barges at pick-up, drop-off, and designated mile points to the Inland River Vessel Movement Center
  • Maintain radio watch, complete required log entries, and coordinate with USCG and lock personnel
  • Help manage the vessel budget and maximize cost efficiency

Required

  • USCG Master of Towing Vessels license, endorsed for service
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience
  • Must meet USCG physical examination requirements
  • Must be 18 or older to board a vessel
  • Able to handle and lift rigging up to 75–100 lbs, climb steep stairs, and sit or stand for long periods
  • Comfortable working outdoors, on the water, in a dock environment
  • Strong communication and organizational skills, and the ability to lead a crew
  • Reliable transportation

Preferred

  • Prior experience as a captain or pilot on inland river towing vessels
  • Background in physical, outdoor labor

Compensation & Growth

$500–$575 per day based on experience, with the vessel rotation discussed at the interview. This is a senior, licensed seat with a company that runs a network of marine terminals and towing operations — a stable place to put a Master of Towing Vessels license to work.
