Tow Truck Driver

Operating as a tow truck driver involves a blend of technical, rigorous safety compliance, and physical stamina. In major hubs like Chicagoland area, the role is highly regulated to ensure safety on busy public roads.
Core Responsibilities & Duties
A tow truck driver's primary goal is to safely transport vehicles that are disabled due to accidents, breakdowns, or illegal parking. Tow cars for police departments, insurance companies, and auto auctions.
 

• Vehicle Securing: Using winches and lifts to load vehicles onto flatbeds or wheel-lifts, ensuring they are properly secured for transport.
• Documentation: Taking photos of vehicle condition before and after towing and maintaining precise logs.
• Safety Protocols: Adhering to safety standards to manage traffic hazards and equipment stability during a recovery.

Licensing & Training Requirements
Requirements vary based on the weight of the truck and the nature of the tow.

• Commercial Driver’s License (CDL):
  • Class C:   A Class C CDL is needed.
• Medical Certification: Illinois drivers must pass a physical exam and carry a valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate, typically renewed every two years.

Must be at least 25 years old.
