General Job Information

Job Summary

This position is located in the DC Department of Public Works (DPW), Fleet Management Administration. The incumbent is responsible for operating a fifty (50) ton low boy with tracker and thirty-five (35) to fifty (50) ton wrecker to tow all types of mobile equipment and vehicles to and from operation areas, shops and repair facilities over the Washington Metropolitan area and Interstate.

Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent is responsible for receiving assignments from the dispatcher and/or shop supervisor by job orders/trip tickets which contain instructions to pick up, and tow broken down District of Columbia Government vehicles for repair to specified destinations. He/she will check the vehicles for various problems before attempting to tow, to verify that vehicles can be put back into operation with minor servicing conducted at the breakdown site, or if the vehicles need to be towed. Checks the cargo of trucks being towed to ensure that the cargo is secured to prevent shifting or falling while in transit, selects the safest most direct authorized routes, maintains daily records of pick-up and delivery times at various stops and reports unique situations to the supervisor for advice.

Qualifications and Education

High School Diploma or GED preferred.

Licenses and Certifications

The incumbent of this position is required to possess a valid Motors Vehicle Operators Permit, and a Commercial Driver''s License/Class A License.

Work Environment/Conditions

The incumbent works outside in all types of weather, drives in all types of road and traffic conditions. Exposed to dirt, trash, grease, and fumes, and the possibility of cuts, bruises, sprains and broken bones and are exposed to the danger of serious accidents while looking up vehicles on the highways and while driving and towing large vehicles, some loaded with cargo.

Medium too heavy physical effort is involved in lifting dolly wheels (average weight is 76lbs) off vehicles were mounted at shoulder height. The work requires frequent bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, crouching, lying, standing or sitting. Incumbent performs strenuous work when handling heavy chains, hooks, bars, tools, vehicle parts, etc., in making couplings between vehicles and tow equipment. Physical effort is also used in working various controls and hooking up service lines between the vehicles to be towed and the towing equipment.

Position Designation: The position has been deemed safety-sensitive, pursuant to section 410 of Chapter 4 of the D.C. Personnel Regulations. Accordingly, the incumbent will be subject to criminal background check; traffic record check (as applicable); pre-employment drug and alcohol test; reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol test; post-accident or incident drug and alcohol test; random drug and alcohol test; and return-to-duty or follow-up drug and alcohol test.

Essential Designation: This position is classified as an essential position under the provisions of the District Personnel Manual Chapter 12. As such, the incumbent is required to serve in emergency situations to perform critical duties, i.e., snow removal, debris removal, transportation, shelter, operations, food distribution, and communications. These duties may be performed when the government is closed or when employees are dismissed early.
