Job Description

Summary/objective

The trade and industry teaching assistant is responsible for assisting the electrical, welding, HVAC and/or carpentry and construction trades instructors with classroom and shop/lab operations as assigned. This position will provide technical instruction as requested and will be responsible for student supervision and student safety. Classroom assignments will be determined by the instructional leader.

Essential functions

  • Assist instructors with delivery of classroom material, curriculum and instruction
  • Assist in operation of job and shop/lab area, with special emphasis on student safety and safety procedures

Competencies

  • Subject Knowledge: Possess a deep understanding of assigned trade and industry program principles and applications. Be familiar with required tools, software, and hardware, and be able to explain complex concepts in simple terms to students.
  • Communication Skills: Be an effective communicator, able to convey information clearly and concisely to students, colleagues, and parents. Listen actively and respond appropriately to student inquiries, concerns, and feedback.
  • Professionalism: Demonstrate professionalism in all aspects of their work, including preparation, punctuality, attendance and commitment to ongoing professional development. Work collaboratively with colleagues and other stakeholders and be willing to take on leadership roles within the school and community.

Work environment

The trade and industry instructor typically works in a classroom environment, but the mission of the school may require work in other settings including outdoors. A standard workweek as assigned by administration is required, but evening or weekend hours may be required to accommodate activities.

Physical demands

While performing the duties of this position, the teaching assistant is frequently required move/position objects, move about their classroom, building and/or across campus. The teaching assistant will work indoors, outdoors in various climate conditions and with applicable tools and machinery which may produce noise and dust. The work may be strenuous and physically demanding. The teaching assistant may respond to emergency situations, student altercations and communicate with staff, parents and students. The teaching assistant may be required to perform extensive work at a computer display terminal.

Travel required

Occasional travel within and outside of the Great Plains Technology Center district may be required for sponsorship of student activities, professional development and participation in other Great Plains Technology Center activities.

Required education and experience

  • High school diploma or equivalency
  • Assigned program related certifications and/or licensure (i.e. electrical, HVAC, welding certification, plumbing, journeyman, etc.)
  • Three (3) years' experience in assigned program related industry (i.e. electrical, HVAC, welding, construction)

Preferred education and experience

  • Prior teaching/training experience
