Altus specializes in delivering comprehensive engineering, prototyping, testing, and production capabilities, including design, fabrication, assembly, and compliance support to our Government customers. The Trades Helper will be responsible for performing non-routine assignments of substantial variety and complexity on project articles, components, and support structures and equipment.
We are currently seeking a Trades Helper (Machine Shop) to support machining, fabrication, prototyping, repair, and production operations at Webster Outlying Field (WOLF) in St. Inigoes, Maryland. This is an excellent opportunity for an entry-level candidate interested in developing hands-on manufacturing and fabrication skills while working alongside experienced machinists, fabricators, and engineering professionals supporting NAVAIR programs.
The Trades Helper will assist skilled machinists and shop personnel by preparing materials, maintaining work areas, operating basic shop equipment under supervision, and supporting fabrication and machining projects throughout the production process.
Primary Responsibilities:
• Assist machinists and shop personnel with machining, fabrication, repair, and production activities
• Keep workers supplied with materials, tools, equipment, and shop consumables
• Prepare and stage materials for machining and fabrication operations
• Clean and maintain work areas, machines, tools, and equipment
• Assist skilled personnel by holding materials, positioning components, and supporting setup activities
• Operate basic hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment under supervision
• Support machine shop operations including cutting, drilling, deburring, grinding, finishing, and material handling tasks
• Follow established safety procedures and maintain compliance with shop safety requirements
• Support project setup, teardown, inventory, and housekeeping activities
• Perform other duties as assigned to support customer and mission requirements
Qualifications:
• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Minimum 18 years of age prior to start date.
• Formal trade school, technical training, vocational education, or military technical training is highly desired
• Minimum one (1) year of experience in a machine shop, fabrication shop, manufacturing environment, construction trade, automotive trade, or related hands-on technical field preferred
• Knowledge of common hand tools and power tools
• Basic understanding of shop safety practices and equipment operation
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
• Strong organizational and communication skills
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment
• Must possess a valid Maryland Driver's License
• U.S. Citizenship required
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Defense Secret Security Clearance
• Must successfully pass all required background screenings, including SSN verification, driver's record review, and criminal background investigation
Work Conditions:
Conditions will vary. Capable of working outdoors and in temperatures ranging from 0-120. The position will include: 45% standing, 20% bending, 15% reaching, 5% sitting, 5% walking, and 10% lifting. Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds. Overtime is a requirement of this position.
