Job Description Summary

The Trades Specialist/Carpenter is an entry-level skilled trades position within the Institutional Facilities Department. This position performs a variety of carpentry-related maintenance, repair, and renovation tasks to support the safe, functional, and attractive operation of campus buildings and facilities. Work is performed under general supervision of the Assistant Director of Maintenance and may involve collaboration with other Lead Trades Specialist as needed. In addition to assisting with other trades (i.e. electrical, plumbing), some janitorial and landscaping tasks may also be required as needed.

This is a full-time, non-classified position; it is non-exempt from FLSA regulations concerning overtime. Minimum base salary is $35,100 ($18/hour) commensurate with education and experience with full state benefits. Not all activities of this position occur within the confines of an 7:00-3:30 schedule and may require evenings and weekends as needed. The weekly schedule for this position will be established between the supervisor and the employee and approved given the needs of the department and the institution.

This position has been designated as Essential. This means that when WVSOM is faced with an institutional emergency, employees in such positions may be required to remain at their work location or to report to work to protect, recover and continue operations at WVSOM. As a professional within the Institution Facilities department, this position will play a key role in ensuring WVSOM's facilities remain safe and accessible. This position requires on‑call availability to respond to occasional emergency needs involving plumbing and other essential trades, including campus snow removal.

Education/Knowledge

Minimum Education High School or GED Required Licenses/Certification Skills Required

Position requires a high school diploma and business/technical/vocational school of up to 18 months beyond high school (a combination of education and experience may be considered).

Valid driver's license is required. Experience in commercial carpentry desired.

Required Experience: Multi-trade building experience including experience in any of the following skills trades including carpentry: plumbing, electrical, mechanical maintenance.; Over 2 years

  • Basic knowledge of carpentry methods, tools, materials, and safety practices.
  • Ability to read simple sketches, drawings, or instructions.
  • Ability to operate common hand and power tools safely.
  • Working knowledge of basic carpentry techniques and materials.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Good interpersonal skills and customer-service orientation.
  • Willingness to learn additional skills related to facilities maintenance.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, climb ladders, bend, kneel, and work in confined spaces for extended periods.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying environmental conditions.

  • Perform basic carpentry work including repairs, modifications, and installation related to buildings, furniture, fixtures, doors, windows, floors, ceilings, and cabinetry.
  • Assist with minor construction, renovation, and remodeling projects across campus facilities.
  • Measure, cut, assemble, and install wood and wood-based materials using hand and power tools.
  • Repair or replace damaged structural and non-structural building components.
  • Maintain campus roads and parking lots, including snow removal, to ensure safe environment for employees, students, and visitors. Occasionally needed on weekends or holidays, depending on weather. Perform landscaping duties and general maintenance on campus grounds.
  • Assist other trades (electrical, plumbing, HVAC, painting, etc.) as needed on cross-functional maintenance projects.
  • Respond to routine maintenance requests and assist with emergency repairs as assigned.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a safe, clean, and operable condition.
  • Follow all safety procedures and institutional policies.
  • Document work performed and materials used as required.
  • Perform related duties as assigned to support departmental operations.

Medical Monitoring: This position requires the incumbent to participate in the Medical Monitoring program at no cost to the employee.
