Job Description:

Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads - both students and employers - for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 25,000 students in 2024-25. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,399 graduates in 2024-2025, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 33% enrolled at TCC. Utility Trades Technician shall self-perform technical and non-technical routine maintenance and preventative maintenance on the physical plant, and provide the campus with electrical, plumbing, and carpentry repairs as required.

This position has been designated an essential position. The employee filling this position may be required to report to work or otherwise fulfill the responsibilities of the position in the event of a college/ campus closure due to weather or other emergent condition(s).

Minimum Qualifications:

  • The Utility Trades worker shall have the knowledge of and skill in performing basic electric repairs in accordance with applicable code.
  • Knowledge of National Electric Code applications.
  • Knowledge of and skill in drywall and acoustic tile repair procedures, surface preparation, and painting.
  • Knowledge of and skill in performing basic plumbing and HVAC repairs.
  • Knowledge of and skill in performing basic construction.
  • Knowledge of and ability to interpret sketches, diagrams and plans.
  • Skilled in the use of basic hand tools (hammer, saw, screwdriver, wrenches) and electric drills.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. climb ladders, bend and stoop.

Additional Considerations:

  • Journeyman's license in any of the building maintenance trades
