Position Information

The New Hanover County Facilities Management Department is seeking a Trades Technician to perform repairs on County facilities including general maintenance and carpentry duties such as: painting; plumbing; roof and soffit; drywall and siding; doors and locks; windows; and cabinets and installing/removing furnishings.

New Hanover Countys Facilities Management department oversees the maintenance and upkeep of all county owned buildings and facilities as well as energy sustainability through our utility management program. We are a dynamic team of trades professionals, custodians, supervisors and administrative staff who work every day to make our facilities the best in North Carolina. Responsibilities for this role include:

  • Assists with construction and renovation of County buildings and facilities and identifying needed repairs
  • Performs repairs on County facilities including: painting; plumbing; roof and soffit; drywall and siding; doors and locks; windows; and cabinets and installing/removing furnishings.
  • Maintains, services, and repairs specialized facility hardware, including hydraulic sallyport doors and air pneumatic controls for jail doors.
  • Maintains tools and equipment.
  • Estimates materials and equipment necessary for projects and assigned tasks.
  • Research equipment and material needs for projects and assist in obtaining quotes and managing contracted work
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level as assigned by Supervisor.
  • Performs work during emergency/disaster situations.
  • Participates in a rotating on-call schedule to handle after hours facility needs.

Knowledge of:

  • Basic construction methods and applicable building codes;
  • Painting techniques and preparing surfaces for finishing work;
  • General mechanical operations;
  • Techniques for safe handling of power tools.

Skilled in:

  • Basic carpentry, plumbing, painting, drywall installation and masonry in a commercial and/or industrial setting;
  • Ability to read and work from architectural drawings;
  • Installing locks and door hardware
  • Physical ability and dexterity to perform duties and responsibilities of job;
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction

7:30 AM - 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday.

Must be available to report for emergency work assignment during emergency situations.

Salary Information:

The target hiring range for this position is $36,325 to $49,038. The full salary range for an incumbent hired into this position is $36, 325 to $61,751. Starting salary will be based on qualifications, relevant experience, internal equity, and budget. Candidates with exceptional qualifications and experience may be considered for a starting salary above the target hiring range, but not to exceed the maximum of the salary range.

Qualifications

Minimum Training and Experience

High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) and one year of related maintenance experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Preferred - Experience with the service/repair of hydraulic sallyport doors and air pneumatic controls for jail doors.

Licenses/Certifications

Required:

  • Valid Drivers License (from any state) and good driving record required at time of application.
  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License required by first date of employment with good driving record.

Other Information

Work Environment: This position will work within the New Hanover County Detention Facility, so candidate must be comfortable working in a secure correctional facility environment, and must pass an additional fingerprint-based criminal background check.
