Job Description

Installs, maintains, and operates all traffic signals, school flashers, safety beacons, and street lighting within the City of Laredo.

Essential Functions/ Job Competencies/ Physical Requirements

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responds to trouble calls, trouble shoots overhead cables, underground cables, lights, detectors, mast arms, and communication connections to determine the cause of traffic signal malfunctions and make subsequent repairs, under direct supervision.
  • Sets-up/operates hydraulic-aerial bucket truck or other city vehicles.
  • Repairs and maintains traffic signal equipment, signal heads, detectors, preventive maintenance, etc.
  • Splices electrical wiring i.e., strip insulation, twist wires together, solders, tapes, applies terminal caps, etc. Reads profiles and blueprints.
  • Installs traffic signal equipment, signal heads, loops, safety monitors, loads switches, relays, etc.
  • Assists in programming and maintaining school flashers and speed radar units.
  • Installs and repairs video and equipment connections, cables, wirings, and other related equipment.
  • Operates/checks/cleans/services various tools: power saws, concrete cutters, radial arms, skills, etc.
  • Assists in maintaining good communication between staff, visitors, and other business contacts.
  • Must follow all rules of telephone courtesy in all telephone communications.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • At least two (2) years of general experience.

Experience in electrical trade, electrical construction, installation, testing, maintenance and repair of electrical or electronic equipment, installation, testing, maintenance and repair of communication equipment, or working with traffic signals is preferred.

Valid Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid Texas Driver License. If applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver License must be obtained within 6 months of employment.

As part of the minimum requirements for all positions with the City of Laredo, a thorough background check and certified school transcripts will be required from all applicants who are offered employment.

Effective February 24, 1997, all selected applicants are required to undergo a drug and alcohol test prior to employment.
