Traffic Control Technicians (TCTs) are responsible for setting up, maintaining, and removing traffic control devices such as cones, barrels, barricades, signs, and arrow boards to guide traffic safely around construction sites, highways, bridges, and tunnels. They direct and monitor traffic flow, using hand signals, stop signs, or temporary barriers to prevent accidents and ensure smooth movement of vehicles and pedestrians. Technicians also coordinate with construction crews to ensure that work zones are safe and that traffic control measures are effective.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES OF POSITION:

  • Ensure a safe work environment in compliance with all safety policies and procedures using the appropriate tools and equipment for the task.
  • Follow all company policies and OSHA regulations for safe working procedures and environment.
  • Knowledge of MUTCD standards and requirements.
  • Follow direction of Supervisor as to daily tasks and expectations for each specific project or jobsite.
  • Implement temporary work zones; utilizing warning signs, traffic cones, drums, etc. per MDOT regulatory requirements.
  • Loading and unloading work zone equipment, sometimes weighing up to 60 pounds, to/from the company vehicle and on the job site.
  • Driving the company vehicle to and from job site in a safe manner.
  • Managing work crews performing flagging operations and/or lane closures.
  • Keeping company vehicle clean and orderly and informing management of any safety concerns or vehicle problems.
  • Complying with management directives.
  • Displaying a positive attitude and safety focus at all times.
  • Overtime work required. Out of town or county work may be required
  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary
  • Must adhere to PPE (personal protective equipment) policy and maintain individual PPE in a functional condition as supplied by company
  • Assumes additional duties as assigned by supervisors.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.
  • The ideal candidate will have 1-3 years of experience with asphalt crews.
  • Ability to obtain DOT medical certification card.
  • Traffic control technician certification through MDOT or ATSSA
  • Knowledge or ability to adhere to federal motor carrier safety regulations.
  • Must have the ability to handle several projects at once, while maintaining tight deadlines.
  • Must demonstrate excellent safety awareness, and a willingness to comply with company policies and safety standards.
  • Must always wear proper attire including safety vests, safety glasses when appropriate, long pants, hard sole/close-toed shoes, and reflect a clean and presentable image.
  • Project a positive and cooperative attitude by maintaining courteous and professional conduct with supervisors, co-workers, customers, and the public.
  • Valid Driver’s License required.
  • Must be able to provide proper documentation that you have the legal right to work in the United States.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Must be able to adapt and work in extreme weather temperatures
  • The following motions will be required: stretching, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, twisting, throwing, walking, standing, reaching, and squatting - these will occupy most of workday
  • Ability to lift up to 60 lbs. for repetitious lifting while using proper lifting techniques.
