Definition

A position in this job category typically installs, troubleshoots and repairs traffic signal equipment or systems, highway lighting systems and wiring systems; and informs the responsible person or organization of difficulties, accomplishments, plans or goals.

Requirements

This position requires a valid New Jersey driver's license. Must obtain a Class B CDL with Air Brakes and Tanker endorsement within 90 days of hire.

Education

Completion of a vocational, technical or specialized training program in electrical or electronic technology. Applicants who do not possess the required education may substitute one (1) year of additional experience.

Experience

One (1) year of experience in work involving the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical or electronic components, equipment or systems.

License

Valid NJ drivers license.

Examples of Work:

Operates a motor vehicle

Operates cherry picker, ladder, platform, or boom trucks

Operates volt or ohm meters

Troubleshoots problems with traffic signal equipment or systems

Installs traffic signal equipment or systems

Installs electrical components and wiring systems

Troubleshoots problems with wiring systems and electrical components

Operates signal tracers

Repairs traffic signal equipment or systems

Repairs radar traffic signal detector units

Tests electronic circuitry

Installs overhead and underground cables

Installs highway lighting systems

Repairs electrical components and wiring systems

Repairs highway lighting systems

Troubleshoots problems with highway lighting systems

Delivers messages, packages or other materials

Repairs underground and overhead cables

Tests wiring systems

Repairs mobile radio communications equipment

Applies appropriate safety procedures

Verifies that quantity and type of item ordered matches invoice

Recommends the purchase of new and replacement materials, equipment, parts and supplies

Informs the responsible person or organization of difficulties, accomplishments, plans or goals

Answers routine questions

Calls (telephone) for needed services, materials or information

Knowledge and Abilities:

Knowledge of procedures for installing traffic signal equipment or systems, and highway lighting systems

Knowledge of established safety procedures and guidelines

Knowledge of procedures for installing electrical components, wiring systems, and conduit systems

Knowledge of procedures for installing underground and overhead cables

Knowledge of procedures for testing wiring systems and electrical components

Knowledge of procedures for operating volt or ohm meters

Knowledge of procedures for operating signal tracers

Knowledge of organizational lines of communication (formal and informal)

Knowledge of administrative principles and practices

Knowledge of procedures for testing electronic circuitry

Skill in operating a motor vehicle

Ability to troubleshoot problems with wiring systems

Ability to troubleshoot problems with electrical components

Ability to repair underground cables

Ability to repair overhead cables

Ability to operate hand and power tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, wire strippers, drills, and tools associated with electrical conduit and wiring work

Ability to troubleshoot problems with traffic signal equipment or systems

Ability to perform precision soldering and desoldering for electronic circuitry work

Ability to operate cherry picker, ladder, platform or boom trucks
