Performs progressively responsible work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signal control devices while acquiring the knowledge and experience required for appointment to the beginning of the training period. As training progresses and knowledge of the trade and skills are developed, signal technician assistants are assigned tasks that are more difficult and are required to exercise more judgment and greater independence in the performance of their work. Instructions are received both orally and in writing and close supervision is received from journey level Traffic Signal Technicians, Signal Technician Seniors, and other designated personnel.
Key Responsibilities and Performance Standards
Assists other Traffic Signal Technicians in troubleshooting in the field and restoring operations to traffic control devices that have underground electrical, electronic equipment or electrical wire/cable failure due to vehicular accidents, vandalism, adverse weather, or construction activities.
Tests traffic signal equipment and related devices under immediate supervision to learn to identify defects in electric and electronic equipment.
Performs routine maintenance on traffic signal equipment and intelligent transportation system components on an ongoing basis.
Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
