We currently have an opening for a trailer mechanic who is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining semi-trailers, flatbeds, and specialty trailers. Perform DOT annual inspections, repair brake systems, replace flooring and doors, repair pumps and other parts on tanker trailers, and keep trailer fleets road-legal and operationally sound. The job does require working on the trucks from time to time, as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- You must pass a fitness for duty test, drug scree, and submit to a TB test on a post offer employment physical.
- Perform DOT annual safety inspections on trailers per 49 CFR Part 393 and 396; document findings and complete inspection reports.
- Diagnose and repair air brake systems: foundation brakes, ABS modules, slack adjusters, brake chambers, and air lines.
- Replace and repair trailer lighting: LED lights, wiring harnesses, markers, stop/turn circuits, and ABS sensors, and repair pumping systems on tanker trailers.
- Repair and replace trailer flooring, walls, roof panels, and door hardware — wood and aluminum trailer structures.
- Maintain and repair trailer landing gear, fifth wheel components, and kingpin assemblies.
- Perform brake adjustments, brake lining replacement, and S-cam brake assembly rebuilds.
- Repair trailer suspensions: leaf springs, air ride systems, axle alignment, and wheel bearing service.
- Weld frame cracks and structural damage using MIG and flux-core welding; restore structural integrity per carrier standards
- Inspect trailers to ensure compliance with safety regulations and roadworthiness standards.
- Test driving vehicles to ensure repairs are effective and performance standards are met.
- Maintaining detailed service records, parts inventory, and mechanical maintenance reports.
- Ensuring compliance with safety regulations and maintaining a clean, organized work environment.
- Provide your own tools.
- Job is performed onsite. No remote work is offered for this position.
- Follow safety protocols and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Perform other related duties as necessary or assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills of trailer mechanical and electrical systems, including hydraulics, air brakes and pumps.
- Knowledge of air brake systems, including foundation brake geometry, chamber sizing, slack adjuster adjustment, ABS fault diagnosis.
- Knowledge of electrical/lighting, including 7-way connectors, ABS wiring, LED lighting circuits, and continuity testing.
- Knowledge of suspension systems: leaf spring replacement, air ride bag service, axle alignment procedures.
- Knowledge of structural repair, including wood floor replacement, aluminum panel repair, door track and seal replacement.
- Ability to weld using MIG and flux-core on trailer steel frames of different types of trailers and the various systems of the trailers.
- Comfortable using mechanical and electrical power tools to perform necessary work on trailers.
- Ability to read and comprehend repair manuals and technical diagrams.
- Physical fitness and manual dexterity are required to handle heavy components and work in various conditions.
- Valid driver’s license.
Required Education and Experience
- High School Diploma, preferred
- 1+ years of trailer repair experience, preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods of standing, bending, stooping, and kneeling are required while working on the trailers and trucks.
- Must be able to lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds repeatedly throughout the shift.
- Must be able to reach above shoulder level while lifting 50 pounds throughout the shift.
- Ability to work in an uncontrolled environmental setting where temperatures can be extremely cold, hot, or humid, depending on the outside temperature.
- The job is performed in an environment where unexpected, sudden loud noises, beeping backup alarms, flashing lights, and sudden movements may occur.
- Must be able to pass a respirator certification and wear a respirator as necessary.
Work Schedule
- Monday - Friday, 7:00 am to 3:00 pm.
- Schedules can vary from time to time based on business needs.
- Overtime is mandatory from time to time, as needed.
Pay Range
- $20.00 to $28.00 per hour, based on verifiable experience.
