Metro Transit is currently seeking Train Operators to carry out the mission, vision, and values of the organization. These individuals are responsible for operating Metro Transit Light Rail vehicles in a safe, dependable, efficient and on-time manner. Train Operators follow rules, procedures, policies and regulatory requirements to ensure safe efficient and courteous service to customers.

This posting will fill positions with a start date of October 26, 2026, and future dates, depending on need. This position will establish a six-month eligible list for current and future positions.
Starting hourly wage rate is $29.70/hour. After one year of employment, the hourly wage rate will increase per the ATU contract. All shifts and job information will be governed by ATU seniority and the union agreement. Overnight shifts are eligible for differential pay.
There are pay rate increases until employees reach the top of the pay range per ATU contract.
Shift differential.
5% for all hours worked in a shift scheduled between 8:00 p.m. to 11:59 p.m.
7% for all hours worked in a shift scheduled between 12:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m.
Hiring Bonus
$5000 Hiring Bonus for current CDL holders with Passenger endorsement and no Air Brakes restriction
$3000 Hiring Bonus for all other licensed drivers. This includes candidates that hold a valid driver's license and a valid CLP (Commercial Learner's Permit) with a Passenger endorsement and no Air Brakes restriction or can obtain one within 10 days of their notification of passing the interview.
What you would do in this job
Work Schedule: Train operators work 8-hour days, five days per week, and could be scheduled any day of the week, including Saturdays and Sundays. Work schedules could require working weekends, late evenings, overnights and holidays.
Training Schedule: Train Operators attend approximately 13 weeks of paid training and must pass a six-month probation or evaluation period upon successful completion of the operator training program.
What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)
Work History Requirement:
Three (3) years of verifiable work experience within the past seven (7) years, and you must have worked for one of these employers for at least one (1) full year.
License Requirements:
Must have been actively driving with a valid driver's license for the past five years.

NOTE: Individuals who need to obtain a Commercial Learners Permit will have up to 10 calendars days after they pass the interview to provide a copy to HR. If they are unable to provide this, they will no longer be considered for the train operator role. Individuals will receive resources after their application has been reviewed by HR to help them study for the three required Commercial Learners permit tests (General Knowledge, Passenger, Airbrakes).

Work Environment:
Position works both inside and outside in varying weather and environmental conditions. One-third to two-thirds of the time works near moving parts or equipment, vibrations and around risk of electrical shock. Typical noise level for this position is loud.
Physical Requirements:
Regularly required to: sit for long periods, stand/walk occasionally, speak using a two-way radio, hear normal conversations and over a two-way radio, reach with hands/arms frequently below chest height and occasionally overhead, on a rare occasion, lift/carry/push/pull up to 50 pounds, must have adequate close vision, distance vision, normal color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
