POSITION OVERVIEW

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) is seeking Training Representative 3 - Apprentice Academic Instructors to support the Apprentice School's academic and technical education programs.

The Apprentice School combines craftsmanship, scholarship, and leadership, with apprentices receiving both production-based craft training and academic instruction. Instructors will support apprentice learning through classroom instruction, curriculum development, assessment, academic support, and coordination with craft instructors.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare instructional materials for one or more courses, including:

  • Lesson plans

  • Syllabi

  • Handouts

  • Visual aids

  • Other instructional materials

  • Conduct classroom instruction using appropriate teaching strategies, including:

  • Lecturing

  • Demonstrations

  • Discussions

  • Applicable instructional activities

  • Enforce Apprentice School and company policies.

  • Evaluate apprentice progress through assignments, examinations, grading, and other assessments.

  • Provide individual assistance and additional instruction to apprentices as appropriate.

  • Provide retesting opportunities for apprentices who require additional support.

  • Remain current on developments in assigned teaching areas, instructional methodology, and applications to shipbuilding.

  • Support other Apprentice School activities, including pre-apprenticeship instruction and admissions interviewing.

  • Communicate and collaborate with apprentice craft instructors and lead craft instructors.

  • Ensure academic instruction remains relevant to craft skills development.

  • Assist the Academic Manager with administrative duties and special projects.

  • Maintain academic records and course documentation.

  • Support class coordination and scheduling.

  • Assist with curriculum development and maintenance.

APPRENTICE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT

Apprentices:

  • Work in a production environment.
  • Attend trade-related theory classes.
  • Rotate through various work areas.
  • Develop their craft skills.
  • Participate in leadership and extracurricular opportunities.
  • Complete the World Class Shipbuilding Curriculum (WCSC) during their apprenticeship.

Apprentices typically attend academic classes two days per week for eight hours per day, with 23 class sessions per quarter. Apprentices are paid for their academic class time and are expected to remain actively engaged.

Technical Core Instruction

To qualify to teach technical core courses, candidates must have:

  • An Associate Degree from an accredited college/university in the applicable discipline, and/or
  • Documented scholarly and/or professional achievement in the applicable discipline.

General Education Instruction

To qualify to teach general education courses, candidates must have:

  • A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college/university, and
  • At least 18 graduate credits in the discipline being taught.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated academic, instructional, scholarly, or professional expertise in one or more of the Apprentice School's subject areas and the ability to translate technical or academic knowledge into effective classroom instruction.

Candidates should be comfortable working collaboratively with academic staff, craft instructors, lead instructors, and apprentices while supporting curriculum relevance to shipbuilding and craft development.
