Job Description

Basic Purpose

Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities involving the training and professional development of employees in various topics or skills. This includes the preparation of lesson plans and other materials to be used in conducting training, scheduling and coordinating various workshops, classes, or seminars, conducting training in a variety of settings and/or facilitating a variety of meetings or seminars.

Typical Functions

The functions performed in this job family will vary by level, unit and organization, but may include the following:

  • Prepares or collects information and materials to be used in conducting and/or facilitating training, meetings or seminars, including lesson plans, training guides, participant manuals, videos, slides and other materials.

  • Determines employee and agency training and professional development needs through surveys, interviews, or other sources; reviews and analyzes special requests for training courses and professional development.

  • Schedules and coordinates training classes, workshops, seminars, conferences or meetings.

  • Conducts classroom or other types of training using adult education and training principles and techniques; evaluates results and makes changes or adjustments as needed.

  • Counsels employees and supervisors concerning training problems and provides information about educational opportunities and eligibility requirements.

Level Descriptor

Levels are distinguished based on the complexity of assigned duties, the level of expertise required for completion of work assignments, and the responsibility assigned for the supervision of others.

This is the career level of this job family where employees are assigned responsibility for a full range of activities in developing and presenting training courses and programs. This includes preparation of curriculum, designing participant manuals, collecting appropriate videos and other materials, and conducting or facilitating training, meetings, seminars or other discussions in various settings. Limited responsibilities may be assigned for providing guidance, or training to others in developing and conducting employee training courses.

Education and Experience

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of a bachelors degree plus one year of experience in education or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one year of qualifying experience for each year of the bachelor's degree plus one year of experience in education or training; or a master's degree in adult education or human resource development.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of adult education principles and techniques; of classroom and on-the-job training principles; of various types of equipment and materials used in conducting training; of curriculum development methods and techniques; and of software used for rapid online course development.

Ability is required to conduct classroom training, workshops or seminars; to use video, audio and other types of equipment to present training; to gather information to use in developing training courses; to communicate effectively; to use small group facilitation tools; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; to plan and organize adult education courses and facilitation activities; and to plan and evaluate training activities.

Special Requirements

This position will be assigned to the Oklahoma School Security Institute (OSSI) division of the Department of Public Safety. Selected candidates must be comfortable and familiar communicating with both commissioned law-enforcement personnel as well as civilian public-sector employees in a clear and professional manner.

OSSI serves all schools state-wide. Frequent travel is required routinely; overnight travel is required moderately; out of state travel may be required occasionally.

Preference may be given to individuals with the following knowledge, certification, and/or experience:

  • 5+ years CLEET Certified Law-Enforcement experience (or equivalent from another state)
  • 5+ years training in Law-Enforcement specific programs
  • 3+ years experience employed as a SRO (School Resource Officer)
  • 2+ years experience in Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles/certification
  • 2+ years experience in Behavior Threat Assessment and Management (BTAM) principles/certification
  • School Safety specific training/experience
  • School Administration specific training/experience

Regional assignment may be based on qualified applicant selection; however, this position does not require relocation and will not cover expenses related to any applicant's election of relocation.
