Summary

This position is responsible for advising, coaching, and providing academic interventions with college transfer students through the Transfer Advising Center. The transfer advisor will perform activities that will assist transfer students in their transition from application at SCC to transfer to a four-year institution.

Activities of the Transfer Center include academic counseling of transfer students in the pre-enrollment phase, proactive advising and academic coaching, informational programming for all transfer students, and assisting transfer students with career/major exploration. This position must be able to interpret student needs and provide individualized services and assistance while maintaining confidentiality. The Transfer Advisor will employ imagination and creativity in the application of duties and responsibilities and is not averse to change. This position is expected to regularly seek new and improved methodologies, policies and procedures for enhancing the success of the advising process.

All functions of this position are expected to be carried out at both the Pinehurst campus and the Hoke Center.

The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide quality holistic academic advising in a variety of formats for transfer students.
  • Develop long-term degree pathways and coordinate transfer academic exploration & opportunities for transfer students.
  • Build and foster relationships with transfer students.
  • Ensure FERPA compliance.
  • Maintain a caseload of transfer students and monitor student registration activities to ensure academic success.
  • Understand CAA (Comprehensive Articulation Agreement) and ICAA (independent Comprehensive Articulation Agreements).
  • Maintain an extensive knowledge about academic programs, policies, procedures, and student support services within the scope of their responsibilities.
  • Advise and register special, non-degree seeking students.
  • Serve as a backup for General Education advising.

  • Professional judgment, confidentiality, and ethical practice in all functions.

Supervisory responsibilities:

  • This position does not supervise others.

Qualifications

Required education and experience:

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • At least one year of experience in an educational environment;
  • Proficient in using Microsoft Office products.
  • Experience in using a variety of student database software.
  • Excellent oral, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks during peak registration periods.
  • Passion for working with students with various backgrounds, experiences, and goals.

Preferred education and experience:

  • At least one year of experience in higher education advising.
  • Experience with Ellucian Colleague.
