Transfer Station Supervisor
The City of Columbus has a current job opening and is accepting applications for the position of full-time Transfer Station Supervisor.
This is supervisory position requiring responsible, semi-skilled work in the operation and maintenance of the City Solid Waste Transfer Station. An employee in this class supervises staff and participates in day-to-day operations including the weighing, loading and billing of solid waste for transfer to the Northeast Nebraska Solid Waste Coalition Landfill. Work is performed under the direction of the Public Work Director and the employee will exercise considerable independent judgment in transfer station operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervises and participates in the inspection of loads for toxic waste and other substances prohibited in the landfill; supervises and participates in the operation of a computerized truck scale and billing system that will weigh solid waste carried by municipal, industrial and licensed commercial haulers and the general public.
- Observes haulers in the cleaning of the tipping floor and supervises and participates in the cleaning of the tipping floor, basement, and waste pit; supervises and participates in the operation of a hydraulic push pit ram system that loads the solid waste into the walking floor waste trailers. Supervises and participates in the parking, hooking and unhooking of trailers to the building.
- Collects fees from the public; operates cash register; counts receipts and ensures delivery to City Hall; prepares and sends end-of-day and end-of-month reports to City Hall for tracking and billing; handles the processing of claims and bills generated from the operation of the transfer station and its operations; monitors budget and expenditures; sets up customer accounts.
- Supervises and participates in general maintenance, preventive maintenance and repair work on equipment; lubricate and check oil levels on rams and hydraulic power unit; replace or repair hoses, connections, motors and other equipment as needed; supervises and participates in the operation of equipment such as a front-end loader, pickup truck, semi-tractor trailer, and other small equipment.
- Fills out and completes various state and federal agency forms and reports and completes inspections of floor and loads to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
Qualifications
- Some college or equivalent business management experience preferred or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Maintain a Commercial driver's license within 3 months of hire.
- Experience in the operation of heavy equipment.
- Must become certified in Waste Management by the Solid Waste Association of North America.
