Transit Fleet Powertrain & Systems Technician
Step into a day where your hands keep a city moving. You start with a multi-point inspection, move into a diesel tune-up, consult scope traces on an ignition concern, and wrap the shift bringing an automatic transmission back to life. Every repair you complete keeps riders on schedule and vehicles mission-ready.
What you will work on
- Full diesel tune-ups, overhauls, and related component service
- Complete gasoline engine overhauls
- Light- and heavy-duty transmission overhauls/rebuilds
- Machining tasks such as valve grinding
- Differential teardown and overhaul
- Suspension service including air-spring and hydraulic systems
- Pneumatic systems: brakes, steering, and accessories
- Hydraulic systems: brakes, steering, and accessories
- Electrical starting and charging systems diagnosis/repair
- Ignition diagnostics, gasoline tune-ups, and scope analysis
- Chassis wiring, harness repair, and auxiliary accessories
- Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC)
- Installation and removal of fareboxes
- General welding and basic fabrication
- Minor bodywork and panel replacement
Bring your own tools
You provide a complete set of mechanic's tools (excluding special tools) up through 1¼ inch wrenches and sockets, plus metric tools up to 20 mm, suitable for the work described above.
Schedule & environment
Operations run seven days a week, and availability to work any shift is expected. This is not seasonal or on-call work.
Licensing & permits
- Valid State of Michigan driver’s license and a clean five (5) year driving record submitted with your application
- Michigan Chauffeur-based “BP” temporary instruction CDL permit (T.I.P.) required before your hire date
- Valid State of Michigan Group B Commercial Driver License with Passenger and Air Brake Endorsement within 90 days of hire
- Industrial Forklift permit obtained within 30 days of employment

Assessments & required testing
- ASE Preventative Maintenance (PM) test
- Six (6) State of Michigan mechanic certification tests
- Written qualification exam with a minimum passing score of 70 percent (70%)
- Must be able to pass a physical examination, vision screening, and drug screen administered by a physician.
