General Definition of Work

The Transit Mechanic Foreman performs advanced skilled trades work to vehicles involving inspecting, repairing and maintaining revenue and support vehicles, directing work assignments of assigned staff, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the supervision of the Transit Maintenance Manager. Supervision is exercised over assigned staff. This position is classified as an essential position during designated planned or unplanned events.

Shift: 3:30 pm - 12:00 am, on a possible rotating weekend schedule

The set starting range for this position is $54,850.00 to $57,066.00 annually.

Essential Functions

  • Supervises Mechanics, Mechanic Assistants, and Maintainer Crew Leader, by assigning, directing, training, and evaluating staff and their work performed; assignment dependent upon work shift
  • Assists with hiring, supervising, and scheduling of division personnel; recommends reward, transfer, promotion, suspension, termination, and demotion
  • Coordinates the scheduling of vehicles for maintenance, inspection and repairs; informs the Transit Maintenance Manager of the status of repairs
  • Schedules special repairs needed after hours and on holidays.
  • Ensures proper work and cleaning procedures are followed
  • Performs the duties of the Mechanic as needed including diagnosing and repair of A/C and mechanical problems and performing preventative maintenance
  • Supervises and participates in required State inspections, preventive maintenance and diagnosis; adjusts, repairs and services hybrid, gasoline, diesel-powered vehicles and electric powered vehicles
  • Services automotive and heavy-duty assemblies, systems and accessories such as drive train, suspension systems, braking systems, multi-speed transmissions, torsion arms, hydraulic system, compressed air system, vacuum, and electric controls, air-conditioning, electrical systems and components, wheelchair lifts, airbags, etc.; rebuilds parts as necessary
  • Performs tire installations and repairs; mounts and balances tires; performs wheel alignments
  • Operates various types of shop equipment, machinery, forklift, specialized tools and devices such as dynamometers, specialized kingpin press, repair and rebuilding planetary drives, diagnosis multiple complex computer-operated systems on buses, dial gauges, wheel alignment gauges, grinders, drill presses, hydraulic lift, impact wrench, power tools, and specialized tools for electric vehicles
  • Responds to road calls and other emergency calls for service including after-hours call-outs for breakdowns
  • Performs road tests of vehicles to ensure safety and quality of work performed
  • Advises Supervisor of additional work needed and repairs that cannot be completed
  • Completes State inspection reports and work orders indicating parts used and time spent.
  • Performs general custodial duties in the automotive shop area
  • Complies with regulations governing the handling and disposal of hazardous waste and the use of personal protection
  • Performs diesel engine tune-ups and engine overhaul or rebuilds
  • Assists in the training of new staff and instructs on safe equipment use and operations
  • Generates required reports using computer software

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, practices, materials, and tools of the automotive and bus mechanic trade
  • Thorough knowledge of the operating and repair characteristics of hybrid, gasoline, and diesel-powered equipment, electric powered equipment, and machinery
  • Thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of bus maintenance trade
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles of internal combustion engines
  • Knowledge of the practices, methods, and tools of welding and machinery operation
  • Ability to assign and supervise the work of skilled mechanics and other shop workers
  • Ability to diagnose defects in and repair a wide variety of maintenance and construction equipment
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, vendors, and the general public

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED certification required
  • ASE certification/ Auto Mechanics Certification/Associates Degree or equivalent
  • Supervisory experience
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience

Special Requirements

  • Possession of or ability to obtain Commonwealth of Virginia State Inspector license and Type II A/C certification within one year of employment
  • Valid commercial drivers license (Class B with Air Brakes and P endorsement) in the Commonwealth of Virginia with a satisfactory driving record

  • This is a safety-sensitive position subject to drug and alcohol testing guidelines as set forth by the Federal Transit Administration and the US Department of Transportation in 49 CFR Part 40, and Part 655, as amended
  • A pre-employment drug screening is required for this position
  • Drug and alcohol testing guidelines set forth by the U.S. Department of Transportation and Federal Transit Administration, will be followed during the employment period

Physical Requirements

  • This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force
  • Work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling or smelling, pushing or pulling and lifting
  • Work has standard vision requirements
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word
  • Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels
  • Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms-length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities
  • Work frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to fumes or airborne particles and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to the risk of electrical shock, exposure to vibration and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment
  • Work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic)
