This position is responsible for investigating and documenting incidents for criminal prosecution and/or referral to management, and the security of employees, patrons, bus and rail systems, transit centers, Park-n-Rides, and special events. This is a safety sensitive position subject to the rules and regulations of the RTD Drug and Alcohol Policy and is an armed sworn position under CRS 16-2.5-146.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential:

The RTD Transit Police Department operates a complex security model dedicated to providing a safe and secure transit system for our riders, employees, and the community. In this position, you will have the opportunity to directly impact the safety and security of RTD and its patrons by:

  • Enforcing Colorado State law through observation and patrol
  • Performing investigations relating to theft, violence in the workplace, crimes on RTD property, and crimes against patrons and employees
  • Processing crime scenes and performing evidence collection and analysis
  • Performing comprehensive facility and counterterrorism threat and vulnerability analyses of the organization's properties and special events
  • Providing comprehensive written reports, procedures and implementation plans to protect employees, patrons, facilities, and equipment
  • Completing citations and arrests as needed
  • Other duties as required

Working with Transit Police provides a unique chance to support a diverse community through assignments to mobile patrol and foot patrols of properties, trains, buses, and special events. The transit police jurisdiction encompasses nearly 2,400 square miles, operating in eight counties and 40 cities across the Denver Metro region.

While working with Transit Police, you will also have specific opportunities to support your fellow RTD employees through:

  • Conducting security-related training programs for employees, contractors and other transportation workers especially in the area of counter-terrorism activities.
  • Reviewing incident reports involving employees, investigating and resolving incidents, and preparing written responses.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Base:

  • Completed High School Diploma or GED
  • Must be 21 Years of age at time of hire
  • Must be able willing and able to attend a POST accredited police academy
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing
  • Ability to use sound judgment
  • Ability to manage time and workload effectively which includes planning, organizing, and prioritizing with attention to details.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including afternoon and overnight shifts, weekends and holidays
  • Must have and maintain a valid Driver's License

Preferred:

  • An associate degree in business, public administration, management, criminal justice or related field preferred
  • Current licensure and certification through Colorado P.O.S.T. (Peace Officer Standards and Training)
  • Proficient in all aspects of the investigations process
  • Familiarity with the workings of the criminal justice system; including federal, state, and local law enforcement regulations

Salary Step Scale:

P05 $35.81/hourly Academy recruit and Field Training phase, non-POST certified

PO4 $38.56/hourly Completion of first full year or CO POST certified at time of hire

PO3 $41.17/hourly Completion of second full year

PO2 $44.08/hourly Completion of third full year

PO1 $55.10/hourly Completion of fourth full year

Police Officer Trainees:

Candidates who are hired may be sent to a state certified law enforcement academy. Upon successful completion, the trainee will still need to complete a field training program and will not move to PO2 until completion of this training.

If referred by an RTD employee, please include their name or email address on the Workday application when asked, "How did you hear about us" and by selecting "I know someone at the company." In turn, they could be awarded a $2,000 referral bonus.

Other Information:

  • Requires the submittal of a complete application to RTD Careers Page, completion of online skills assessment, completion of Physical Agility Course, in person or virtual oral board

  • Requires the candidate to undergo a background check, CVSA, psychological evaluation, drug screen, and medical evaluation
