Job Responsibilities

Uses specialized survey equipment including total station, data collector, and level to proficiently perform basic survey operations as instrumental in establishing elevations of benchmarks, ground controls, profiles and cross sections. Utilizes proper techniques to setup total station, level it and obtain data with the Carlson field PC and to setup the auto level and run loops. Establishes control, line and grade records topography, records measurements of elevations and angles and distances including the location of property boundary lines. Surveys ground control for aerial mapping. Stakes project right of way lines, Makes calculations of horizontal and vertical curve alignment. Assists with editing survey data collected from the survey. Assists with making sure all survey data is accurate and complete prior to transmittal to Headquarters. Performs with a high degree of accuracy

Proficiently performs duties within a team to perform surveying with the Global Positioning System (GPS) and Robotics Total Station, including surveys for preliminary design purpose and the location of wetland boundaries. Properly set up and collect horizontal and vertical control at beginning of survey project using GPS equipment via VRS System and/or Robotics Total Station.

Maintains and records field notes, reduce level notes and computes traverses. Maintains field book for recording survey data including profiles, cross-sections, topography, horizontal and vertical data, sketches and/or other pertinent field data. Assists with the computations necessary to reduce level notes and adjust traverse loops to GPS control. Notes should be neat, clean, legible and with very few, if any errors.

Proficiently performs rodman duties. Utilizes proper procedures in operating level and level rod to determine elevations and total station for line of sight. Uses prism pole to provide alignment and collect topography. Uses prism to measure angles and distances to locate property boundary lines. Stakes project right of way lines. Uses two-way radio to relay proper descriptive information to crew member. Provides assistance to other employees in rodman duties. Uses bush axe to clear brush for line of sight and takes measurements as needed.

Under the direction of a SC registered land surveyor, performs courthouse and field research to locate property lines and corners and assists in plotting property information. Locates tax maps, deeds, plats and other documents from county courthouses, obtain property ownership and obtain utility data in the field with minimal supervision. Records the necessary data to locate and/or re-establish individual property lines in accordance with the Standards Manual for land surveying in South Carolina.

Maintains personal daily work log. Utilizes ESS in SCEIS to enter work time with charge codes and leave requests. Uses ESS to maintain personal information.

Assist with and/or oversees the operation, calibration and maintenance of basic equipment and job safety including placement and maintenance of signs.

Assists with the setting and surveying of ground panels to establish the coordinates and elevations of the panel and the surveying to establish the coordinates and elevations of panel points for photogrammetric topographic mapping.

Assists in matters relating to highway design including horizontal and vertical alignment.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

A high school diploma and two (2) years of experience that is related to the area of employment; or an approved acceptable equivalence. A valid motor vehicle operators license is required.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves frequent bending, kneeling, stooping and lifting up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natual environmental hazards. May require occasional exposure to noise. May require working outside of normal work schedules and weekends.
