Mission or Goal of Unit: Themission of the Division of Transplant Surgery is to provide excellence inclinical care, the advancement of science through research, and the training ofundergraduate and graduate students in our discipline. The Department foster alevel of professional activity essential to the graduate and to theprofessional growth of the faculty. The Division provides junior faculty withclinical and research experiences that prepare them for their professional careers.The Division is committed to enhance diversity among its faculty, staff, andstudents. Finally, faculty have a responsibility to provide service to theirprofession and to the university community.

Chief Purpose of this position: The Department of Surgery at VCU/VCU Health System is recruiting for an open-rank level position in the area of transplant surgery. Duties will include all responsibilities of the teamattendings (inpatient rounds, clinics, consults, surgeries as primary andassistant surgeon, call, education, quality assurance). The VCUtransplant team procures its own donor organs, and this position will also servein support of that mission.

Position Responsibilities: 

Teaching: Faculty member will have teaching responsibilities in all areas of transplant surgery.

Research: Faculty member will establish clinical research projects with a record of publication in refereed journals and externalfunding. They are expected to developinterdisciplinary collaborations to enhance the research program in at VCU. Inaddition, they will mentor both undergraduate and graduate students in theirresearch laboratory.

Service: Faculty will serve on departmental and/or university committees as necessary, as well as in a professional capacity in their field, i.e., reviewer, conference organizer, etc.

Clinical: Clinical responsibilities are broad and include deceased and living donor kidney and liver transplantation, and pancreas transplantation. Additional opportunities exist with an extensive multidisciplinary hepato-biliary surgery practice as well as dialysis access (hemo and peritoneal).

Required Qualifications:

  • Mustbe board certified/board eligible in transplant surgery or equivalent
  • ASTS fellowship training in multi-organ transplantation and procurement
  • Ableto meet licensing requirements in Virginia, and be UNOS certified or eligible
  • Prior experience teachingresidents and medical students
  • Demonstrated ability towork in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility witha population of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds andexperiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Boardcertification in general surgery will be expected during the course of theappointment, commensurate with board requirements
  • Training in robotic surgery
