Disclaimer-this position will be considered classified-exempt and “at will.”The Transportation Accountant Auditor Trainee will report to the Federal Aid section of the Finance Division. This position will perform beginner professional accounting and will work under general supervision. Responsibilities include learning about federal funding, developing familiarity with federal regulations, reconciling and auditing federal projects to confirm all expenditures are captured accurately, ensuring maximum reimbursements are received, creating intricate excel pivot tables, processing journal voucher corrections in wvOasis, and other duties as assigned.Pay Grade: 15ResponsibilitiesAssists in the balancing and reconciling of accounting recordsAssists in posting accounting data to general ledger accounts, including recording, adjusting, or correcting entries to the general ledgerAssists in compiling data for the preparation of accounting reports and may prepare reports of limited complexityAssists in the maintenance and review of expenditure and budgetary control accounts, subsidiary and general ledgers, accounting journals, financial reports, batch reports, and other fiscal recordsAssists in the transferring and encumbering of fundsThe work involves treating a variety of common problems, questions, or situations in conformance with established criteria.Participates in formal classroom and on-the-job training to develop familiarity with state and federal rules, regulations, laws, and auditing methods and proceduresTravel may be required; therefore, a valid driver's license is required.Knowledge of generally accepted professional accounting principles and practices (GAAP)Knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, and techniques of governmental accounting and auditingKnowledge of database principles and/or computerized accounting applicationsSkill in the use of a personal computer, especially in the area of accounting spreadsheet and reporting applicationsAbility to prepare accurate accounting entries and adjustments and perform mathematical computations accurately and quicklyAbility to analyze and interpret accounting recordsAbility to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writingAbility to establish and maintain effective working relationships with othersRequired Training / EducationBachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university and at least 24 semester hours in accounting.Required ExperienceThis is the entry-level classification in this series.
