DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSIncumbents in this class are expected to follow well established procedures and guidelines. The Director of Transportation is readily available and can provide direction on more serious situations which may arise. While the dispatching of drivers is typically routine, situations arise regularly which require incumbents to exercise independent judgment such as routing changes due to traffic conditions. The incumbent works in an office environment the majority of the time and is also responsible for preparing and maintaining department records and reports. The class of Transportation Dispatcher is distinguished from the class of Bus Driver in that the Transportation Dispatcher's primary responsibilities are to plan routes, schedules and dispatch Bus Drivers.
