Job Title: Transportation Engineer / Project Manager
Job Description
This role leads the planning and management of transportation engineering projects across Ohio, including trails, roadways, sidewalks, green and complete streets, and active transportation initiatives for ODOT, LPA, and non-LPA clients. The Transportation Engineer / Project Manager provides technical leadership and client management, guiding multidisciplinary teams on projects that may also include community planning, greenways, waterfront improvements, and both active and passive park developments. The position focuses on delivering high-quality, innovative transportation solutions while maintaining strong client relationships and ensuring projects meet scope, schedule, budget, and quality expectations.
Responsibilities
- Plan, manage, and deliver transportation engineering projects such as roadways, highways, trails, sidewalks, roundabouts, green and complete streets, and active transportation facilities across Ohio.
- Provide overall project leadership, including technical direction and client management, to ensure projects meet scope, schedule, budget, and quality objectives.
- Supervise associates directly or indirectly, assigning and overseeing project tasks, monitoring budgets and schedules, and ensuring timely and accurate deliverables.
- Review, mentor, develop, and manage associates' performance in alignment with project goals and organizational expectations.
- Manage all activities for assigned projects, including scheduling work, tracking project budgets, directing internal teams and sub-consultants, and coordinating across disciplines.
- Establish and monitor project quality requirements, ensuring adherence to QA/QC performance standards and organizational processes.
- Report project budget variances to leadership and develop plans to bring projects back into budget compliance.
- Communicate regularly with clients, regulatory agencies, and other external stakeholders to maintain alignment on project objectives, progress, and issues.
- Prepare and deliver formal presentations to clients, stakeholders, the public, and regulatory agencies to communicate project concepts, progress, and outcomes.
- Prepare proposals and contracts, defining project requirements, scope, budget, and deliverables based on client discussions and technical understanding of the work.
- Identify potential funding sources to support transportation and community projects and incorporate them into project planning where appropriate.
- Identify project risks early in the project lifecycle and actively monitor and mitigate those risks through effective planning and decision-making.
- Support and implement programs that foster a positive, collaborative work environment and help develop associates to their fullest potential.
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to client service by building and maintaining positive relationships with clients, subcontractors, regulatory agencies, and internal teams.
- Build and strengthen client relationships through consistent, high-quality project delivery that meets or exceeds client expectations.
- Identify future project opportunities, emerging client needs, and potential new services, contributing to business development efforts.
- Attend networking events, trade shows, and technical conferences to represent the organization, build professional relationships, and support business development.
- Ensure project teams follow organizational and operational guidelines, processes, deadlines, and procedures, and recommend improvements when appropriate.
- Facilitate efficient processes with regulatory agencies and other stakeholders to keep projects moving forward and in compliance with applicable requirements.
- Provide technical review of staff work products, offering constructive feedback and guidance to ensure accuracy, quality, and adherence to standards.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in Ohio.
- At least 8 years of experience in transportation engineering for ODOT or LPA projects, including roadway, highway, trail, sidewalk, and roundabout projects.
- Demonstrated experience in civil engineering with a focus on transportation engineering and roadway design.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D, OpenRoads, or MicroStation for transportation and roadway design.
- Experience working with ODOT standards, processes, and requirements.
- Strong project management skills, including managing scope, schedule, budget, and quality for multiple concurrent projects.
- Ability to facilitate efficient processes with regulatory agencies and other stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
- Ability to supervise, mentor, and develop staff, including reviewing work products and providing performance feedback.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare and deliver formal presentations to clients, stakeholders, and public audiences.
- Proven ability to build and maintain strong client relationships and ensure high levels of client satisfaction.

- Experience managing transportation projects that incorporate green and complete streets and active transportation elements.
- Experience in community planning and park-related projects, including greenways and waterfront improvements.
- Experience coordinating and managing sub-consultants on complex, multi-disciplinary projects.
- Demonstrated ability to identify project risks and develop effective mitigation strategies.
- Experience identifying and leveraging potential funding sources for transportation and community projects.
- Interest in and ability to participate in business development activities, including networking events, trade shows, and technical conferences.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Work Environment
The role offers a hybrid work arrangement with a typical schedule of 2-3 days in the office and the remaining time working remotely. A fully remote arrangement is possible for the right candidate, with the expectation of occasional visits to project sites, offices, or client locations as needed. The position is based in Ohio, and the successful candidate must reside within the state. The work involves collaborating with multidisciplinary teams using industry-standard transportation design software such as AutoCAD Civil 3D, OpenRoads, and MicroStation, as well as working within ODOT and LPA standards and processes. The project portfolio includes a strong backlog of transportation and community projects, including large and interesting initiatives planned into 2026.
