About the Role The Transportation Manager oversees and manages the Food Bank's fleet of trucks, leased cars/vans, and warehouse equipment, ensuring adherence to all external and internal standard operating procedures (SOPs), FMCSA compliance, and outstanding customer service and satisfaction. The position is responsible for managing Transportation team morale effectively and articulating and demonstrating organization and department objectives and values.
This position is scheduled to work Monday - Friday, typically 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM with an hour lunch.
Responsibilities: (70%) Manage Daily Transportation Operations, Fleet Maintenance, and Regulatory Compliance
Oversee the daily operations of the Transportation team to ensure safe, efficient, and timely transportation services in support of organizational goals. Coordinate and schedule preventive maintenance and repairs for the organizations fleet with vendors, internal staff, and rental truck providers as needed. Manage the departments annual operating and capital budgets, monitoring expenditures and documenting variances. Ensure compliance with all FMCSA regulations and maintain required vehicle, driver, and operational records. Ensure the Transportation team adheres to Food Bank standard operating procedures, food safety requirements, and organizational safety standards. Utilize Roadnet routing software in partnership with the Transportation Dispatcher to optimize routes, monitor performance metrics, and ensure on-time pickups and deliveries. Serve as backup Dispatcher as needed. Conduct periodic route observations and customer visits with Transportation and Warehouse Associates to monitor service quality, safety, and operational effectiveness.
(30%) Provide Leadership, Team Development, and Safety Oversight
Lead, coach, and develop the Transportation team by fostering open communication, accountability, collaboration, and high performance. Serve as the organizations safety lead by promoting and strengthening a culture of workplace safety through leadership of the Workplace Safety Committee and ensuring compliance with all safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements. Ensure Raleigh Transportation staff comply with all food safety standard operating procedures (SOPs) and complete required food safety training. Model and reinforce the Food Banks mission, values, and organizational policies while maintaining a positive and inclusive work environment. Oversee Human Resources processes within the department, including performance management, employee relations, coaching, hiring, onboarding, and policy compliance. Recruit, develop, and mentor a diverse, high-performing team by identifying growth opportunities and supporting professional development. Partner with the Executive Management Team (EMT) to support the implementation of organizational priorities, strategic initiatives, and culture-building efforts. Build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders to strengthen partnerships and advance the Food Banks mission.

Minimum Requirements Education & Experience
Associates degree required; Bachelors degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Logistics, or a related field preferred. Five (5) to seven (7) years of experience managing transportation operations, including dispatch, fleet maintenance, and regulatory compliance, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, required; eight (8) to ten (10) years preferred.Five (5) to seven (7) years of supervisory or people management experience required; eight (8) to ten (10) years preferred. Experience with workplace safety programs and food safety practices preferred.
Physical & Environmental Requirements
Ability to work in both office and warehouse environments and occasionally outdoors in varying weather conditions. Ability to travel to Food Bank branch locations, partner agencies, and vendor sites as needed. Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. Ability to occasionally lift and move materials weighing up to 25 pounds. Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and use a computer for extended periods throughout the workday.
Technical & Operational Requirements
Experience using transportation routing software required; experience with Roadnet preferred. Knowledge of fleet operations, vehicle maintenance coordination, transportation logistics, and applicable regulatory requirements. Valid North Carolina drivers license required. Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) strongly preferred.

Physical Demands: While performing the essential functions of this position, the employee is regularly required to:
Talk, hear, and interact without deliberate impediment (e.g., wearing or listening to headphones, etc.); Sit, stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel. Lift and carry loads of up to 60 pounds for short distances (less than 50 feet) To reach for and/or lift upward with their arms and hands to heights of 6 feet or greater. To twist their body right or left, often repeatedly.
The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, and to stoop, crouch or crawl. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

Work Environment: General warehouse environments, including refrigerator, produce cooler, and freezer with temperatures ranging from -10 degrees Fahrenheit to 41 degrees Fahrenheit. Some protective clothing will be provided and must be worn for this work.
While performing the essential functions of the job, the employee is required to work in a warehouse setting. The employee will be required to interact with Food Bank personnel in the warehouse(s). The employee will occasionally be exposed to moving mechanical parts and vehicles. Safety toe footwear with non-skid soles is required. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate. The warehouse can be extremely cold at times and extremely hot during the summer months.
