Primary Purpose:
Operate school bus and related equipment to provide safe and orderly transportation of students and other authorized persons on assigned route and to and from other designated locations.
Assist Transportation Dept with daily operational tasks to ensure district vehicles are properly maintained, fueled, prepared, and available for safe and efficient transportation services. Provide administrative and logistical support as assigned by the Transportation Director.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Clear and valid Texas commercial driver's license with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements
High school diploma or GED preferred
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Must be 18 years of age
Ability to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and annual physical exam
Due to the possibility that this position will require the transportation of students, it is considered a safety-sensitive position. The position is, therefore, subject to the District's Drug and Alcohol testing as referenced in DHE(LOCAL) and conducted under Administrative Regulation "MISD Drug and Alcohol Testing Procedures".

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Vehicle Operation
- Drive bus daily following assigned route and adhering to established schedules.
- Drive bus to and from extracurricular activities.
- Anticipate problems such as traffic, weather, road conditions, and schedule changes and make necessary adjustments to ensure student safety and reduce delays.
- Perform pre- and post-trip inspections according to specifications to ensure bus can be operated safely and notify supervisor of needed repairs. Keep assigned bus clean and maintain appropriate level of fuel.
- Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical problems and complete required corresponding reports.
Student Management
- Instruct students on safe entering, exiting, and passenger rules and regulations. Supervise students while they board and leave the bus and cross the street.
- Perform emergency evacuation of students on bus when the situations warrants.
- Maintain discipline and use effective behavior management control over groups of students. Report student discipline problems to appropriate administrator and communicate with teachers and parents regarding student's behavior when warranted.
Safety
- Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
- Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crowbar, and reflector.
- Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor. Report any hazardous conditions along scheduled route.
- Install snow chains during inclement weather.
- Maintain safety certification.
- Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
Other
- Operate and monitor two-way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office and other drivers.
- Complete and maintain accurate, up-to-date, and timely records and reports including but not limited to those related to bus mileage, gas and oil consumption, and number of passengers transported.
Vehicle Preparation & Support
- Prepare buses and district vehicles for field trips and extracurricular activities.
- Conduct pre-trip readiness checks including fuel levels, cleanliness, fluids, and required equipment.
- Ensure vehicles are properly stocked with safety equipment and necessary documentation.
- Assist drivers with vehicle preparation and post-trip inspections as needed.
- Clean and maintain the interior and exterior appearance of buses and district vehicles.
Fueling & Vehicle Maintenance Support
- Fuel buses and district vehicles as needed.
- Monitor fuel levels and report fuel usage concerns.
- Perform basic vehicle servicing tasks such as checking fluid levels, tire pressure, and cleanliness.
- Report maintenance issues, damage, or safety to the Transportation Director.
- Assist mechanic and transportation staff with non-technical maintenance tasks.
Parts & Supply Runner
- Pick up and deliver vehicle parts, supplies, and equipment from vendor and district locations.
- Maintain inventory of commonly used transportation supplies.
- Assist with organizing parts storage and transportation inventory.
Administrative Support
- Assist with filing, record keeping, and transportation documentation.
- Enter data into transportation software and spreadsheets as assigned.
- Help maintain vehicle maintenance records and fuel logs.
- Answer phones and assist visitors when needed.
- Prepare and distribute transportation-related forms and communications.
General Transportation Support
- Assist with special transportation projects and department needs.
- Support route drivers and transportation staff as directed.
- Help maintain transportation facilities, parking areas, and fueling locations.
- Other duties as assigned.
