Job Announcement

Since 1977, the Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) has served the Fairfax County community by enhancing mobility, safety, and the quality of life of residents, businesses, and visitors through planning, coordinating, funding, implementing, and sustaining a multimodal transportation system. This position works as a motivated, highly qualified, and public service-oriented transportation planner within the Active Transportation, Capital Projects, and Traffic Engineering Division. Coordinates complex multimodal transportation projects. Working with neighborhoods throughout the county, such as Reston, Tysons and along Richmond Highway, continues developing the multimodal transportation network that is critical to the vitality of Fairfax County. In a dynamic and quickly evolving environment, this position will provide a challenging and rewarding experience for an individual invested in achieving the county's ambitious multimodal transportation goals.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting in developing, scoping, planning, managing, and reviewing intersection, roadway, bicycle, pedestrian, and other multimodal transportation facility studies and project plans
  • Providing routine planning, traffic engineering, and design analyses and reviews for these projects and studies
  • Coordinating studies, plans, reports, and special assignments within the department and with other local, state, and federal agencies, consultants, elected officials, special interest groups, and citizens with the ability to resolve project issues
  • Assisting in preparation, oversight, and monitoring of program and project schedules, and managing consultant contracts from scoping to completion
  • Performing traffic safety analyses, reviewing, and analyzing accident data
  • Conducting site visits, and attending field and local community meetings
  • Preparing and attending public hearings, workshops, community, state and national events, and presenting information to senior leadership and/or elected officials, residents, community associations, and other agencies
  • Preparing and communicating technical reports, correspondence, status reports, meeting summaries, official items for Board of Supervisors' consideration, and other documents, as required
  • Performing other duties as assigned

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelors degree in civil engineering, urban, regional or transportation planning, or a closely related field; plus two years of professional experience in civil engineering, urban, regional or transportation planning, or a closely related field.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

Valid drivers license

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education and experience in two or more of the following areas: transportation planning for roadway and multimodal projects, traffic engineering, and/or transportation design.
  • Experience preparing and reviewing multimodal transportation plans or traffic analysis.
  • Experience working with the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements for transportation projects.
  • Experience preparing capital project design plans and transportation studies.
  • Project management experience
  • Ability to coordinate and complete multiple assignments within established priorities.
  • Experience coordinating with local and state governments entities, including elected officials.
  • At least two years of experience using transportation related software, such as ArcGIS, Highway Capacity Software (HCS), SYNCHRO/SIMTraffic, or VISSIM
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, experience in preparing and giving presentations to community groups, senior-level leadership, and/or elected officials.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships.
  • Desire to advance a collaborative and supportive culture.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work is generally sedentary. However, employee may be required to do some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of items under 25 pounds in weight. Ability to input, access, and retrieve information from a computer. Visual acuity to review detailed drawings, plans and documents. Ability to operate a motor vehicle. Conducts periodic field observations requiring standing, riding, and exposure to the elements (weather). All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
