    Job Description

    Since 1977, the Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) has served the Fairfax County community by enhancing mobility, safety, and the quality of life of residents, businesses, and visitors through planning, coordinating, funding, implementing, and sustaining a multimodal transportation system. FCDOT is seeking an innovative, motivated and qualified Transportation Planner II to join the Active Transportation, Capital Projects, and Traffic Engineering Division (ACTD). This position works on projects in Fairfax County’s Residential Traffic Administration Program, including the Traffic Calming Program, Cut-Through Traffic Restriction Program, Through Truck Restriction Program, $200 additional Fine for Speeding Program and the Watch for Children Program. This position may also perform other work related to residential traffic safety as well as supporting residential parking programs and associated street sign management.

    Responsibilities:
    • Evaluates residential traffic issues for program eligibility, prepares or review traffic engineering studies, including traffic calming assessments, cut-through traffic evaluations, and or/other traffic operations studies
    • Manages residential traffic projects, including data collection and processing and analysis, reports results and provides recommendations to Board of Supervisors’ office staff
    • Uses Excel and ArcGIS to create, issue, and evaluate qualifying public ballot packages; uses ArcGIS to maintain relevant map layers and produce project maps
    • Evaluates and updates public content for program web pages, including program maps
    • Manages inventory of program materials
    • Maintains program databases to ensure data is accurate and up to date
    • Coordinates with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), Board of Supervisors, and County police and fire departments; responds to complex inquiries and provides detailed technical information verbally and in writing
    • Prepares for and participate in public hearings, workshops, community meetings, and state or national events; presents information to residents, community associations, and elected officials
    • Prepares official items for Board of Supervisors’ consideration, and other written materials as required
    • Attends project-related meetings, including community and task force meetings, both in-person and virtual during evenings and occasionally during weekends
    • Performs other duties as assigned
