Job Announcement

Since 1977, the Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) has served the Fairfax County community by enhancing mobility, safety, and the quality of life of residents, businesses, and visitors through planning, coordinating, funding, implementing, and sustaining a multimodal transportation system.

This position works within our Active Transportation, Capital Projects, and Traffic Engineering Division (ACTD). Manages and oversees projects in Fairfax County's Residential Traffic Administration Program (RTAP), including the Traffic Calming Program, Cut-Through Traffic Restriction Program, Through Truck Restriction Program, $200 Additional Fine for Speeding Program, and the Watch for Children Program. May also perform other work related to residential traffic safety as well as supporting residential parking programs and associated street sign management.

The position:

  • Leads, prepares, and oversees traffic engineering studies, including traffic calming assessments, cut-through traffic evaluations, truck traffic impact analysis, and other traffic operations studies
  • Manages residential traffic programs, including data collection and processing, analyzing, and reporting results and providing recommendations to Board of Supervisors' office staff
  • Uses Excel and ArcGIS to create, issue, and evaluates qualifying public ballot packages; maintains mapping layers and produce project maps
  • Prepares and communicates technical reports, status reports, meeting summaries, official items for Board of Supervisors' consideration, and other documents, as required
  • Prepares for and participate in public hearings, workshops, community meetings, and state or national events; presents information to residents, community associations, and other agencies
  • Supervises Transportation Planner II and Planning Technician, providing training, quality control, coaching, and performance reviews
  • Attends project-related meetings, including community and task force meetings, both in-person and virtual during evenings and occasionally during weekends
  • Performs other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelors degree in civil engineering, urban, regional or transportation planning, or a closely related field; plus four years of professional experience in civil engineering, urban, regional or transportation planning, or a closely related field.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

Valid Drivers License

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Four or more years of professional experience in traffic engineering and/or transportation planning program administration
  • Experience preparing or reviewing traffic engineering studies, including traffic calming assessments, cut-through traffic evaluations, and/or other traffic operations studies.
  • At least three years of experience in using Geographic Information System (GIS) tools such as ArcGIS, database software, design software, and/or traffic analysis tools
  • Experience in coordinating with local and state government entities, including elected officials
  • Experience in preparing and making presentations to the public or elected officials
  • Strong project management skills, ability to organize and coordinate multiple projects and assignments, and establish priorities
  • Supervisory experience overseeing other staff.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with strong presentation and negotiation skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, public officials, and the general public

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to input, access, and retrieve information from a computer. Ability to operate a motor vehicle. Visual acuity to review detailed drawings, plans and documents. Work is generally sedentary. However, employee may be required to do some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of items under 25 pounds in weight. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
