Description

Gonzalez Companies is a partner-managed firm providing comprehensive Planning, Design, and Construction Management services to large and small Water, Sewer, and Utility Districts; Departments of Transportation; and municipalities.

Roads Don't Design Themselves. Neither Do Careers.

We're looking for a Transportation Engineer (I/II) who's ready to learn by doing, not by watching from the sidelines. If you've ever driven through a well-designed intersection and thought "someone got that just right," or you like the idea of your work literally shaping how people move through their communities, we should talk. This role is built for someone hungry for knowledge, ready to make a real difference, and excited to bring genuine attention to every project — no matter how early in your career you're starting.

Grow Your Career with Blueprint
This role includes a seat in Blueprint, our new early career leadership program for engineers looking to grow beyond the typical entry-level experience. Over six months, participants take part in a hands-on curriculum covering professional development, business acumen, and project delivery — including case studies, simulations, and role-play exercises. The program covers topics like project economics, communication, and leadership fundamentals, and concludes with an in-person capstone event where participants present their work and outline goals for the year ahead.  Your Future Starts With A Plan.

What You'll Get to Do

  • Help design and develop transportation projects — roadways, intersections, pedestrian facilities, traffic improvements — the everyday infrastructure people rely on without even thinking about it
  • Build engineering drawings, plans, and 3D models using CAD software (MicroStation, OpenRoads, AutoCAD Civil 3D) — turning ideas into something buildable
  • Run engineering calculations covering alignments, grading, drainage, quantities, and traffic control layouts (the math that keeps roads from flooding and intersections from becoming chaos)
  • Support project documents like cost estimates, technical reports, design summaries, and bid packages
  • Get out of the office for field visits — data collection, condition assessments, surveying coordination, construction observation — because roads are best understood in person, not just on a screen
  • Team up with senior engineers, project managers, and multidisciplinary groups to build real design solutions
  • Help prepare IDOT, LPA, or municipal submittals and keep everything aligned with design standards (yes, there are a lot of standards — you'll get the hang of it)
  • Dig into topographic surveys, geotechnical reports, environmental documents, and utility data
  • Coordinate with clients, utility companies, and permitting agencies as needed
  • Contribute to internal QA/QC processes, documentation, and design reviews

What You'll Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field
  • 0–5 years of experience in transportation, roadway, or municipal infrastructure design — genuinely open to candidates just starting out
  • Familiarity with MicroStation/OpenRoads and/or AutoCAD Civil 3D is a plus
  • A grasp of geometric design principles, drainage, traffic control, and plan development
  • Comfort assisting with design calculations, drawings, cost estimates, and technical documentation
  • EIT/FE preferred at the entry level (required for Engineer II); PE-track candidates strongly preferred as you grow
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills — independence will come naturally as your experience builds
  • Familiarity with DOT, LPA, or municipal design standards is a bonus, not a requirement
