Position Summary
The Transportation Router position at St. Mary’s Food Bank is responsible for planning, coordinating, and optimizing the delivery routes for semi trailer truck and Route Drivers to ensure timely, cost effective, and efficient transportation of food to and from St. Mary’s Food Bank Locations, Partner Agencies and Food Rescue Partners. This role is central to logistics and delivery operations, focusing on route planning, scheduling, and coordination to meet delivery demands while maximizing fleet utilization and minimizing costs.
Essential Functions
- Route Planning & Optimization: Review customer orders and develop delivery routes that consider shipment load, distance, traffic, delivery time windows, and customer unloading requirements to maximize efficiency.
- Coordination: Coordinate with invoicing team that all reships, POS, and stops are accurately routed and develop batches and coordinate the truck loading with the warehouse staff.
- Fleet Utilization: Determine the most precise use of available trucks, including cubic space utilization, to meet delivery demands.
- Driver Assignment: Assign routes to drivers, including backhaul orders, ensuring each driver is assigned to the most efficient area.
- Loading & Driver Sheets: Prepare and update loading and driver sheets with accurate stop lists, and maintain weekly/master sheets for planning and evaluation.
- Customer Integration: Incorporate customer delivery and unloading time requirements into routing schedules.
- Real Time Monitoring: Review truck mileage and tracking data, especially for out of state deliveries, to support planning and performance evaluation.
- Problem Solving: Adjust routes in response to traffic delays, truck breakdowns, or schedule changes, and coordinate alternative transportation when needed.
- Communication: Maintain clear communication with drivers, customers, agency partners and other internal and external stakeholders to provide updates and resolve issues.
- Any other duties as assigned by leader
Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, as well as applicable professional standards. Provides all internal/external customers of St. Mary’s Food Bank with an excellent service experience.
Physical Demands/Environment Factors
- Requires extensive sitting with periodic standing and walking.
- May be required to lift 10- 20 pounds.
- Requires significant use of personal computer, phone and general office equipment.
- Needs adequate visual acuity, ability to grasp and handle objects.
- Needs ability to communicate effectively through reading, writing, and speaking in person or on telephone.

- Qualifications, Skills and Abilities
- Minimum High School diploma with a 4-year BA/BS college degree or equivalent certifications in the logistics field is preferred but not required.
- 2+ years related experience preferred
- Experience with Roadnet Routing Software or similar routing programs

- Strong computer skills and have a working knowledge of programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bi-lingual in English and Spanish preferred.
- Previous food distribution and non-profit work experience
