Transportation Routing Coordinator

Job Summary

Position Purpose

The Transportation Routing Coordinator is responsible for the design, management, and continuous improvement of safe, efficient, and reliable transportation routes for all students, including Exceptional Children (EC) and Regular Education populations. This role ensures that routing operations are data-driven, compliant with state regulations, and responsive to the needs of students, families, and schools.

Nature & Scope

The Transportation Routing Coordinator performs advanced routing and operational coordination under general supervision. This position requires strict adherence to district policies, procedures, and state regulations while exercising independent judgment in resolving complex routing challenges.

The role does not include direct supervision of staff but requires strong collaboration, coordination, and functional oversight of routing processes. The position plays a critical role in ensuring operational efficiency, data accuracy, and effective communication across the transportation system.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Route Planning & Optimization

? Design, implement, and continuously adjust transportation routes to ensure efficiency, safety, and on-time service for all riders

? Analyze routing data to optimize bus utilization, reduce ride times, and improve overall system performance

? Adjust routes in response to student enrollment changes, program needs, road conditions, and construction

? Support planning for special routes, programs, and school-related activities

Data Management & System Updates

? Maintain and update routing and mapping data within transportation systems, including student assignments, bus stops, route changes (run updates), and the addition of new streets and route attributes as needed

? Ensure data integrity across all routing platforms by performing daily system and database maintenance to support accuracy, functionality, and reliability

? Utilize routing software to develop, manage, and maintain a comprehensive database of transportation routes, schedules, and student information

? Generate, review, and distribute reports, routing lists, driver directions, and student rosters to support operational decision-making and planning

? Review and revise both Regular Education and Exceptional Children (EC) routes to ensure optimal efficiency and effective use of buses and drivers

? Support transportation leadership by evaluating and modeling routing scenarios using variables such as fleet size, bell schedules, safety considerations, and budget constraints

? Conduct projections, simulations, and system analyses to support planning, operational decisions, and budget development

? Assist department leadership in responding to parent and stakeholder inquiries by providing accurate routing information, including stops, times, and routes

? Ensure all routing practices and decisions reflect equitable and nondiscriminatory service delivery for all students

Communication & Problem Resolution

? Serve as a primary point of contact for routing-related concerns

? Coordinate with supervisor, drivers, school administrators, staff, and families to communicate route changes and resolve issues promptly

? Investigate complaints and provide timely, solution-focused responses

? Maintain positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders

State Reporting & Compliance

? Prepare and submit required state and district reports related to transportation routing

? Ensure all routing data is accurate, complete, and compliant with local, state, and federal regulations

? Support audits and ensure documentation is properly maintained

Operational Support & Continuous Improvement

? Monitor daily routing operations and assist in resolving real-time issues as needed

? Provide backup support for routing functions during absences or peak periods

? Identify opportunities for process improvements to enhance efficiency, safety, and service quality

? Assist with route bid preparation and implementation as needed

Required Qualifications

? High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate''s degree preferred; Bachelor''s degree in business administration, logistics, transportation management, information systems, public administration, or a related field preferred

? Experience in scheduling, logistics, operations, data management, dispatching, or a related field

? Demonstrated proficiency in computer applications, including spreadsheets, databases, reporting tools, and data management systems, with the ability to learn and effectively utilize routing software, transportation management systems, and other district technologies

? Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage complex routing data, schedules, and operational requirements

? Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with employees, school administrators, parents, and community stakeholders

? Valid North Carolina driver's license required

? Ability to obtain and maintain all required district, state, and federal certifications, clearances, and training requirements

Preferred Qualifications

? Experience in student transportation, school operations, logistics, fleet management, dispatching, or a related field

? Experience using routing, mapping, geographic information systems (GIS), or transportation management software

? Experience analyzing data and preparing reports to support operational decision-making

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

? Knowledge of routing principles, logistics, operational planning, and transportation systems

? Ability to learn and maintain knowledge of local geography, road systems, and traffic patterns

? Ability to analyze complex data and develop effective routing solutions

? Ability to analyze data, identify trends, and make recommendations to improve operational efficiency and service delivery

? Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

? Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy

? Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines

? Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions under pressure

Working Conditions

This position is primarily office-based, requiring extended periods of computer use. Occasional fieldwork may be necessary, which may involve exposure to weather conditions, traffic environments, and typical transportation-related hazards. The role may require standing, walking, bending, and lifting as needed.

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Board policy and administrative procedures.
