Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:

Plan and revise school bus transportation routes and schedules for eligible District students and serve as departmental liaison to District staff, students and parents, employees of the contractor providing buses and drivers, and members of the public. Bilingual positions in this classification require fluency in a second language.

SUPERVISION:

Positions in this classification are supervised by a designated supervisor at the assigned work site.

Positions in this classification exercise no supervision.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Determines and schedules school bus routes, load sizes and bus type needed for each route.
  • Revises maps and forms to reflect current routes and schedules.
  • Recommends District responses to school boundary changes, street access changes, new housing developments and other elements which impact population demographics.
  • Determines priorities and special busing responses to District programmatic needs.
  • Determines student eligibility for District-provided transportation, and maintains and distributes the eligibility lists.
  • Recommends and assists in the implementation of new and amended transportation practices.
  • Audits the progress and conduct of buses en route to ensure compliance with District rules and procedures, and state and local laws.
  • May recommend disciplinary action be taken against students and drivers.
  • Interprets, coordinates and executes District policy, procedures and regulations of the Districts Student Transportation program.
  • Reports the existence of unsafe conditions on bus routes to city and/or state authorities.
  • Acts as liaison between bus contractors, students, parents, the public and the District.
  • Schedules and conducts transportation orientations for school employees and parents.
  • Plans, schedules and conducts bus safety classes and evacuation drills with students and drivers.
  • Writes daily and other periodic reports on student transportation activity.
  • Estimates and controls costs in accordance with budget requirements.
  • May be required to transport students.
  • Performs job related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCEAND EDUCATION/TRAINING

Two years of experience using routing and scheduling, preferably computer-based, in a transportation system.

  • OR-

Four years experience supervising school district bus drivers.

  • OR-

Four years experience of school district bus driving.

  • OR-

Four years experience dispatching vehicles in a transportation system.

  • AND-

High school graduation or the equivalent.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATES/REGISTRATIONS

An appropriate, valid California driver's license*

  • Must be presented upon offer of employment and maintained throughout employment in this classification.

ADDITIONAL SALARY INFORMATION: This is a non-exempt position, Regular Classified Salary Range 43A. Most positions in this class work 8hours/12months. The probationary period for employees in this classification is six (6) months (or 130 working days of paid service).

THE EXAMINATION:

  • Written Examination. WEIGHT: 100%

  • Performance Examination. WEIGHT: Pass/Fail

  • Bilingual Certification. WEIGHT: Pass/Fail. This certification is required for bilingual positions in the class.

  • Only qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the examination process.

  • Successful candidates who pass all parts of the examination process will be placed on the eligibility list in order of their relative merit.

  • Candidates will be notified in accordance with the Personnel Commission Rules.

  • This eligibility list will be active for a period of (1) year.

SCHOOL POLICE OFFICERS:

School Police Officers Differential compensation:

POST Intermediate Certification: 6% to base pay

POST Advanced Certification: 8% to base pay

Associate degree: 5% to base pay

Bachelor degree: 7% to base pay

Master degree: 9% increase to base pay
