POSITION: Transportation Specialist / Driver Instructor
Works under the direction of the Manager of Transportation to assure the safe and efficient operation of the Worcester County Public Schools Transportation Department.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists Manager of Transportation in day to day operations of the department and acts as the Manager's designee when directed.
- Collaborates with the Manager of Transportation to oversee transportation software programs.
- Certify bus drivers to safely transport students for school and school-related activities.
- Develop, conduct, and maintain records of pre-service and in-service training programs as per COMAR and MSDE guidelines.
- Conduct safety meetings and instruct National Safety Council Defensive Driving classes.
- Train driver applicants in classroom and behind-the-wheel training for CDL licenses with S and P endorsements.
- Evaluate driver performance through observation with the Supervisor of Transportation/Operations.
- Maintain records required by the Motor Vehicle Administration, MSDE, DOT, and federal motor carrier safety regulations.
- Ensure compliance with drug and alcohol program requirements (Title 49 CFR, Part 40).
- Use computers to manage records for drivers and aides.
- Evaluate transportation routes and report unsafe road conditions.
- Assess road conditions during inclement weather.
- Serve as a substitute bus driver or aide as needed.
- Assist in maintaining the department's fleet.
- Coordinate vehicle inspections per COMAR standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Manager of Transportation.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Minimum of five years of experience as a school bus driver preferred.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES:
- Certified as a bus driver trainer per MSDE and COMAR requirements.
- Valid Maryland CDL with air brake, passenger, and school bus endorsements.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical documents and write reports.
- Mathematical Skills: Basic mathematical ability.
- Reasoning Ability: Solve practical problems and interpret instructions in various formats.
- Computer Skills: Basic knowledge of Word, Excel, and internet applications; willingness to pursue training.
- Other Skills: Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
- Knowledge of Federal and State driving regulations and the Worcester County road network.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Talk, hear, and listen to others.
- Frequently sit, stand, use hands and arms.
- Occasionally lift/move up to 50 pounds.
- Operate wheelchair lifts and secure disabled passengers.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and moderate noise levels.
- May work in extreme heat or cold weather.
DUTY YEAR AND SALARY:
This is a 12-month exempt benefitted position. Salary S-09 based on direct experience relevant to the job description.
