Description of Work

This position functions as a Transportation Worker II within the Bridge Preservation Unit, Craven County. In addition to work performed at prior level, this position will operate sweeper, attenuator, and other trucks as well as pressure washers; and other hand and power tools. This work is related to the preservation, maintenance and repair of State-Owned bridges, culverts, curb and gutters and storm drains. This position will at times work with Bridge Maintenance on other repairs and projects. This position’s work duties are for the counties of Beaufort, Carteret, Craven, Greene, Jones, Lenoir, Pamlico, and Pitt Counties. There are times when this position must work outside the Division which could include overnight travel. The position is technical in nature and labor intense. The employee will be expected to work in diverse working environments; in all types of weather conditions; in and around heavy equipment; and use power tools. This position involves working in a close environment; or independently as needed. When inclement weather occurs, this position will be called upon to work nights and/or weekends to help in the snow and ice removal process.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC05 / $33,902 - $59,327

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Experience in pipe installation and installation of erosion control devices
  • Experience in the layout of traffic control in work zones
  • Working knowledge of standard bridge maintenance and construction procedures
  • Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, asphalt patching, or snow and ice removal
  • Knowledge of work zone safety and NCDOT Workplace policies and procedures

Necessary Special Requirements:

Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
