Job Description

The Travel Registered Nurse will provide safe, compassionate, and patient-centered nursing care to adolescent and adult psychiatric patients. The RN will assess patients' mental and physical health, develop and implement individualized care plans, administer and monitor psychiatric medications, and provide crisis intervention and behavioral support.

The RN will work with patients experiencing a variety of psychiatric and behavioral conditions, including thought disorders, substance use, suicidal ideation, aggression, and other mental health concerns. Strong therapeutic communication, active listening, empathy, and de-escalation skills are essential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive psychiatric and physical patient assessments.
  • Monitor patients for changes in mental status, behavior, vital signs, and medication effects.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized patient care plans.
  • Administer psychiatric medications and monitor for adverse reactions and side effects.
  • Provide crisis intervention and utilize appropriate de-escalation techniques.
  • Recognize and respond appropriately to suicidal ideation, aggression, and behavioral emergencies.
  • Establish therapeutic relationships with patients through effective communication and active listening.
  • Collaborate with physicians, therapists, MHTs, and other members of the interdisciplinary care team.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in Meditech.
  • Follow facility policies, safety procedures, and behavioral health protocols.
  • Provide patient education and support throughout the course of treatment.
  • Float to areas with the greatest staffing need as required.

Unit Information

The facility includes several behavioral health units serving different patient populations:

  • ADOL: Adolescent patients ages 12–18
  • Serenity: Lower-acuity adult psychiatric patients
  • ITU: Higher-acuity adult patients, including thought disorder diagnoses
  • SRAD: Senior adult psychiatric patients
  • VINE: Lower-acuity adult psychiatric patients

Typical RN patient ratio: Approximately 8:1.

Required Qualifications

  • Current RN license
  • Previous psychiatric/behavioral health experience
  • Strong assessment and crisis-management skills
  • Experience with psychiatric medications
  • Ability to manage patients with behavioral and mental health conditions
  • Strong therapeutic communication and de-escalation skills

Required Certifications

  • BLS
  • ACTIVE BLUE CARD CPI 

Schedule & Other Requirements

  • 12-hour shifts
  • Coverage required 7 days a week, including weekends
  • Days off are not guaranteed unless specified in the contract
  • No on-call requirement
  • Floating may be required based on staffing needs
