Job Title: Cardiac Sonographer 1 Profession: Cardiac Sonographer Specialty: Cardiac Sonographer Duration: 13 weeks Shift: AM Hours per Shift: 8 Experience: 3 years minimum working experience License: Not specified Certifications: BLS (AHA Only), RCS or RDCS Must-Have: Level I Trauma experience required Must be independent and self-sufficient Description: The Cardiac Sonographer 1 performs basic to intermediate cardiac ultrasound services and procedures for adult patients. These include transthoracic, transesophageal, and stress echocardiograms used to diagnose and assess cardiac abnormalities. General duties include preparing equipment, prepping patients, and explaining procedures. The sonographer reviews images and reports findings. They analyze patient clinical history to identify the purpose of the examination. The sonographer frames the clinical question that the examination is intended to answer. They expand the examination as necessary to address the clinical questions. Essential functions include: Performing basic to advanced cardiac ultrasound procedures utilizing a variety of equipment and techniques. Making the necessary measurements required for interpretation to obtain accurate, high-quality results. Identifying and defining cardiac abnormalities and extending the scope of the examination as appropriate. Deviating from standard techniques when necessary and correlating invasive and non-invasive cardiac diagnostic test results with cardiac anatomy and function. Assisting physicians in procedure rooms and operating rooms by performing echocardiographic studies. Assisting in performing transesophageal studies with cardiologists. Calculating appropriate measurements and sterilizing probes. Preparing patients for procedures and obtaining clinical history including cardiac-related physical findings and pertinent laboratory data. Adapting imaging techniques to obtain comprehensive diagnostic echocardiograms. Recording statistics and performing daily maintenance of the Echocardiography Lab and its equipment. Reporting all malfunctions as appropriate. Acting as a resource to other staff regarding equipment, techniques, procedures, and studies. Working closely with the cardiac sonographer quality coordinator to ensure quality processes and protocols are followed. Assisting with accreditation activities as delegated. Implementing protocols as new technology evolves and ensuring standards are implemented and adhered to. Key success factors include knowledge and ability to apply complex sonographic principles, instrumentation, and techniques. Knowledge of cardiac anatomy and physiology is essential. The ability to explain the purpose of the echocardiographic examination to patients and answer their questions is required. Knowledge of approved clinical protocols for each type of cardiovascular ultrasound examination is necessary. Understanding proper infection control procedures is critical. Knowledge of relevant laws regarding patient confidentiality and privacy is expected. The ability to interact and communicate effectively with healthcare providers is essential. Knowledge of medical terminology and skilled utilization of computers and medical equipment are required.
